I hug the girls goodbye, and Ryan shakes the guys’ hands. We thank them a few times for providing dinner yet again.
“It was great!” Ryan proclaims as he digs his flashlight out of his pocket.
Turning it on, we head back to our campsite.
CHAPTER
FOURTEEN
As I watch them leave, holding hands, I can’t help the jealousy that coils inside me. Marley belongs to me.
I chuckle to myself. They haven’t the faintest idea that they’ve been eating human meat this entire time from a girl we’re holding captive in the RV.
They truly believe we find work in every city we visit, but we actually just live off the humans we capture.
It’s a little chewy, but you just have to know how to cook and season it. It takes practice, but I think I’ve mastered it, since none of our victims have ever noticed how differently it tastes from regular beef.
Jared walks up behind me. “Are you going hunting?”
That’s the phrase we use when we are referring to following the people we plan on taking captive.
“There’s nothing else better to do.” I smirk at him.
“There’s a woman in there with no arms or eyes that we could fuck.”
“What’s the fun in that? We need fresh meat anyway,” I tell him.
“Feeding the campers we’ve met human flesh never gets old,” Jared snickers.
“I was thinking the same thing. It’s unprocessed. I can’t think of anything healthier.” I smirk back.
“Dude, you’re fifty shades of fucked up.”
“Like you’re any better,” I plainly say to him.
He laughs maniacally. “Well, don’t stay out too late, and don’t get caught. This one seems uncertain about us, very observant.”
“I always like a challenge.” My voice takes on a deeper edge.
He pats my shoulder and chuckles. “Enjoy yourself. We both know you get off the most on this part—the hunt,” he states as he heads to the RV to get some sleep.
Taking one more mouthful of the whiskey, I wait like a predator, giving them time to settle into their tent, wanting them to feel safe, blissfully unaware of the danger lurking near.
CHAPTER
FIFTEEN
Ryan is out cold the instant the tent zips shut. I turn our little electric camping lantern on, snuggling up under the blanket beside him.
My mind reels over the events of tonight and what was said. Time passes, and before I know it, my bladder is calling to be emptied. Typical—couldn’t have picked a better moment.
Gripping the small lantern and moving as quietly as I can, I unzip the tent and cautiously stretch one leg out, then the other, careful not to wake Ryan. I grab some toilet paper and head toward our usual bathroom spot, choosing a new place further from the truck.
I trudge warily over behind the tree line.
I peel my pants down to the bottom of my thighs and do the deed, squatting just low enough so it doesn’t splash all over my legs. The darkness surrounds me, and I can’t deny that it freaks me out even with the lantern nearby.
Every nerve on high alert, I twist my head repeatedly, taking in everything around me. I catch a glint of something shiny and squint, unsure of what it might be.
