“Exactly,” Brian said, popping a chip into his mouth, the loud crunch echoing around the room.
“Fine,” I conceded. “It was a decent distraction technique, but I can’t go running to Ben every time I need something.”
“Why not?” David asked.
“Because we’re not... This isn’t... It’s not a relationship. He isn’t my boyfriend. I can’t go around depending on him all the time. What happens when he gets tired of having sex with me and wants someone new and shiny?”
Brian shook his head, locks of blond hair falling into his eyes. “He looks pretty damn smitten with you.”
“Today, maybe. But that could all change tomorrow. We both know how he is.” I avoided Brian’s gaze, studying my nails.
“People change, Eve,” David chimed in.
Great, they were teaming up on me.
“I’m not willing to bet my heart on it. He seems pretty set in his wanton ways,” I said.
“First of all, this isn’t a Shakespearean play or a historical romance. Who the fuck says ‘wanton’ anymore? Secondly, I haven’t even seen him look at another woman since you guys hooked up.Andit’s not exactly like you’ve been a nun this past year.”
“Excuse me?” I snarked.
“I’m just telling it like I see it. Maybe don’t judge him for doing the same thing you’ve been doing,” Brian retorted.
“I’m not judging.” My forehead creased.
“You sure about that?” He quirked a brow at me.
I didn’t want to talk about Ben anymore. I didn’t judge him for his choices, but my trust was hard won. And as much as I wanted to believe that Ben felt the same way I did, I had no proof of that being the case. He might whisper sweet nothings in my ear from time to time, but for all I knew, that was part of his usual routine.
“Can we talk about something else?” I complained.
David nodded, knowing a losing battle when he saw one. “Have you talked to Liv since she got back?”
“No. I was giving her time to settle back into the city life before calling her with all my drama.”
They had gotten back from their honeymoon last night. The last thing I wanted to do was unload everything on her the second she’d gotten back. I was letting things settle down a bit before I updated her on everything.
“You should call her. She’ll want to know what’s going on with you. And she might have more insight on Ben,” David said.
“Why are you bringing him upagain? Nothing is happening between me and Ben. It's good sex. That’s all."
Brian opened his mouth like he was going to argue, but I cut him off, pushing up from the table. “Save it, Brian. You’re not going to change my mind about it right now.”
I was done having this conversation. This thing with Ben was cleaving me in two. And even though I wanted what I said to be true, I knew it was turning into more than just sex for me.
Ben was addicting. His touch, his smile, his words, his company. I craved him when he wasn’t here, but I needed to stop before it got out of hand.
This was temporary. I wouldn’t be enough to hold Ben’s attention forever. When he was finished with me, I’d have to live without all those things. And I was beginning to realize just how much it was going to hurt when I had to let him go.
