“Neither do I. She’s one of my best friends. We have never crossed that line and we never will. And we are both perfectly happy with that, I swear. Now stop nagging me. You’re worse than my mother.”
If Jack wanted to know our reasons for flirting in the office, then he’d have to take it up with Nora. It wasn’t my secret to tell.
So, despite all the shit Jack was giving me, I wasn’t going to explain how she may have let a few things slip about an office crush after a few beers one night. And half-drunk on tequila shots, I may have idiotically sworn to be her partner in crime to get him to notice her.
“Fine. I’ll drop it,” he muttered, finally catching on to my irritation.
“Great. Now shut the fuck up and spot me.”
So What if I'm A Petty Bitch
Eve
Oliviadriftedoutofthe dressing room, the train of her white gown trailing behind her as she stepped onto the small platform. The plunging sweetheart neckline showed off her cleavage, but the tulle skirt flowed away from her body in princess ball gown fashion. It had off-the-shoulder cap sleeves, and the bodice was embroidered with flowers.
She turned toward the long wall of mirrors, tilting her head to the side and catching my eye in the reflection.
“So? What do you think?” she asked eagerly.
“It’s even more gorgeous than I remember. You look beautiful, Liv.”
The seamstress walked around Olivia, adjusting the fabric here and there, making sure that the fit was exactly right.
This was her last dress fitting before the big day. I had been looking forward to her and Jack tying the knot for what felt like ages. She had been through hell and back the past three years, and it was well past time for her happily ever after.
I sighed, wondering when I would get my happily ever after. Or maybe just an orgasm. My dating life was plain sad.
“What’s that pitiful sigh about?”
“Sorry,” I quickly apologized, replacing my morose expression with a smile. “I was just thinking about my lack of prospects for a date at your wedding.”
“You don’t need one. Nothing wrong with flying solo. What happened to that guy from work? I thought you had a date.”
“We did.” I grimaced, plopping onto the cushioned armchair to watch the seamstress finish up the fitting. “We fucked and then he fled. And never called me after.”
“Asshole.”
“I got him back, though,” I said, smirking.
“Oh Lord, what did you do to him?”
“I found his address in the employee files at the restaurant and sent a glitter bomb to his apartment anonymously.”
It may have been a little petty, but it was also gratifying seeing him come into work with tiny flakes of glitter still in his hair, his clothes dusted with sparkling flecks every day. It would take him forever to get all the glitter out of his apartment.
Olivia huffed out a laugh. “You’re an evil genius. Remind me never to piss you off.”
“Glitter bombs are reserved for the dickwads who don’t call me, so you don’t have to worry. I don’t really have the energy to find another date anyway, so I guess solo is what it will have to be.”
I had never been the kind of girl who needed a man. Men were overrated. At least all the ones I seemed to find. I wouldn’t know what to do with a good one when I found him.
I didn’t feel the need to settle down right now. My acting career was finally taking off. I’d been cast in several off-Broadway plays over the last two years, and this week I’d gotten a callback for a lead role in the hit Broadway production,Wretched. It wasn’t a sure thing, but I was optimistic.
This could be my big break. And if my Broadway career took off, I wouldn’t have much time for a boyfriend. There would be daily rehearsals for 10-12 hours and then, after the show opened, daily performances with multiple shows a few days a week.
“There will be plenty of singles there to have fun with. Jack’s brother, Jameson, is coming alone. Nora isn’t bringing a date. And last I heard, Ben said he was going stag.”
“Great.” I did my best to look thankful that I wouldn’t be the only single one there, but I’d never met Jameson, and Ben and Nora were close friends. There’s no way I wouldn’t feel like the odd one out. Besides, Ben wasn’t exactly my favorite person these days.
