I smirked at her, which only galled her more. She clutched my shirt, pulling me closer so we were toe to toe.
“Who is she?” she asked, enunciating each word.
“Just someone from work.”
She looked like she might murder me, so it was probably in my best interest to elaborate.
“She’s a member of our internal audit team and needed to set up an appointment with me to go over some expenses.”
Her shoulders relaxed. “Oh. You said, ‘it’s a date’ and I thought...”
“You thought I was making a date with a woman while I had you slaving away in the kitchen all day? Were you jealous, princess?” I let my smile spread, and her eyes snapped to mine.
She ignored my question, snaking her arms around my neck and slamming her lips against mine.
I stepped back, unwilling to be distracted. “I’ll take that as a yes.”
She stared daggers at me, but didn’t deny it. Her cheeks were flushed, whether with anger or embarrassment. I wasn’t sure which, but damn, did she look good with that fire under her skin, which was exactly why I’d made sure she knew it was Amber I was talking to and not Mike.
I watched as the realization dawned on her.
“You gave me the wrong impression on purpose.” She pushed me into the corner of the office, away from the door. “Didn’t you?”
I laughed. “I was proving a point.”
“What point was that? That you’re an asshole?” she asked, poking her finger at my chest.
I grabbed her hand, lacing my fingers with hers. “That maybe you have more feelings for me than you thought.”
She gaped at me, taken off guard by the direction I was headed.
I considered having it out with her about it right here and now, but my apartment was full of friends that would undoubtedly be eavesdropping on us if we argued. And as bullheaded as Eve was, there would definitely be an argument.
Instead, I crowded her into the corner, the scent of peppers and lime enveloping me. “While I was on the phone, I was thinking,” I said, putting my arm above her head and leaning down to kiss her neck.
“Be careful. You might get a cramp. I know you don’t use your brain to think often.” Her voice shook slightly, and her body arched into mine automatically.
I growled into her ear, ignoring her snark as I skated my hands down her side and over the curve of her hips. “I was thinking,” I continued, “that you’d look so pretty bent over my desk while I take you from behind.”
A squeak of surprise escaped from her lips as I gripped her backside, grinding against her while I took her mouth in a punishing kiss. She melted into me, pushing past my lips with her tongue, leaving the taste of lime and tequila on my tongue. She moaned, giving my cock every reason to rise to the occasion, but I tamped down my urge to keep her here in my office until she was coming on my fingers. Instead, I pried her off me and took a step back.
“The food is getting cold,” I said, meeting her heated stare head on, watching her chest heave as she worked to get her panting under control.
I imagined she was drenched right about now, wanting me to give her some relief. But I was still angry about her “friends”comment. If she thought she could continue to play coy and not get some sort of pushback from me, she had another thing coming.
Her throat bobbed as she swallowed and she gave me a curt nod, pushing past me back to the other room where our friends were.
I took a swig of my beer, pleased with myself as I relaxed on the couch with Jack while everyone else filled their plates, the sound of the game blasting from my television.
“Did you tell her yet?” Jack asked, glancing toward Eve and then back to me.
“Tell her what?”
“That you’re in love with her.”
I choked on my beer, coughing, while Jack slapped my back a few times. I glanced over to the only two people who were in our vicinity, but Brian and David weren’t paying us any attention. They were both zoned into the baseball game, sitting in the pair of armchairs.
“Why would you say that?” I croaked out.
