“Excuse me, ladies. I should get this,” I say, holding up my phone, then I head into the lounge. “Heeyy, Dani. How’s it going?”

“You sound happy, which means you probably didn’t see the evening news.”

“What does that mean?”

“Are you near a TV?”

“Yeah. I’m at Ash’s place.”

Then switch on Channel 3.”

“Why? It’s not more of Brett?—”

“Just do it!” Dani roars down the line.

Throwing cushions to the floor, I dig my hand down the side of the sofa until I finally find the remote.

“Are you seeing it yet? Dani asks.

“Just switching it on—” I stop what I’m saying as the TV comes to life. I can’t believe my eyes. The word “Jesus,” leaves my mouth on a long breath. “Babe,” I call. “Come in here. Quick.”

Angie soon speeds into the lounge. “What’s up?”

Her beautiful bright smile drops almost immediately when she sees the screen.

“I’ll call you back, Dani,” I say. “Angie needs me.”

CHAPTER TWENTY

TOMMY

There’sa split image on a screen behind the anchor reading the news. On one side is me, taken at the end of a gig, I guess. I’m bathed in red light, shirtless and sweaty. The image on the other side of the screen is of Fraser. “Fuck,” I breath out as Angie and I exchange glances and listen to the rest of the item.

“…Fraser Moore alleges that Tommy Graham threatened him and aggressively held him up against the wall of a Braebeach restaurant. ‘He told me to keep away from his girlfriend,’ Moore quotes. So, who is the new woman that has Tommy Graham in a spin?”

“Oh, shit,” I say out loud, taking Angie’s hand.

“Just weeks after announcing his divorce from his wife of six years, Graham is reported to be in a relationship with Angela Knox. Ms Knox is said to be a close friend of Calla Chambers. If the name sounds familiar, that’s because she’s the wife ofTommy Graham’s Koolum Law bandmate, Ash Chambers.”

“This has got to be a joke,” I say out of sheer disbelief.

Angie says nothing for a beat, then picks up the remote and turns off the TV. “What happened?” she asks. “Did you threaten him?”

I sit Angie down on the sofa, take her hand in mine, and focus on my thumb running a soothing line across her knuckle. “It wasn’t intentional and happened so fast. He was having lunch with this blonde, so naturally, I thought he was cheating on you. I saw red.”

She shakes her head and looks past me. “I can’t believe this, Tommy. This is so out of character for you.”

“I know. I’m sorry.” Squeezing her hand, I bring her attention back to me. “It was a knee-jerk reaction, but Max made me see sense?—”

“Max was there too?” Her hand leaves mine and her head falls back against the cushion. When was this?” she asks, looking up to the ceiling.

“Last week.”

“When exactly?”

“Friday, I think.”

I can see her piecing the sequence of events together in her mind.
