“Oh.” I follow him, almost bewildered at the speed and ease of this situation. A final goodbye is probably a good thing on reflection. Is he really friend material anyway? Probably not. “Well, maybe I’ll see you around?” I smile, opening the door for him as he steps out.
“I doubt, it,” he says, not once looking back.
Yep, that had to be the easiest breakup in history and I’m certain Frasier didn’t really care at all.
TOMMY
20 MINUTES BEFORE
Reaching Angie’s front gate, I stop in my tracks. In the driveway is Fraser’s old black Audi, and just behind that, I see Angie in his arms. He’s kissing the fuck out of her.
While my body tenses, my heart sinks. What the fuck does she see in him?I watch as she invites him in and they disappear inside. At least now, I’ve got the answer I came for.
CHAPTER SIXTEEN
TOMMY
I can’t stop thinkingabout her. My feelings for Angie are changing, or maybe not. Maybe I’ve always felt this way.
She loved Scott, I know that. When Angie married him, there was never a chance of us being together. She found her soul mate. After he died, we became friends, and I was happy with that. I was there for her. Now I’m single, and she’s dating. I don’t like it.
Oz has a play date with Josh, and Max and I are in the music room messing around with a song we’re writing, when we hear Connie calling my name and Oz squealing at the top of his voice. I leap up, my drumsticks fly in the air. My stool falls to the ground and the cymbals take a tumble as I scramble to get to my kid. Max follows close behind, and I swear we must miss two or three steps on the way down.
When I get there, I find the last person I expect to see.
“What a welcome. Two rock stars for the price of one. Hello, baby,” she sneers while our son squeals with happiness in her arms.
“Holy shit,” Max utters from behind me.
“Chelsea. What the fu?—”
“Watch your language in front of the kids, you two.”
I glance at Connie, who hugs Josh tight, probably out of sheer panic by the look on her face.
“I’m so sorry, Tommy. I didn’t know what to do, and Mrs Graham just barged in.”
“How dare you, Connie. I didn’t barge in. I have every right to see my son. Just remember who you work for.”
“Oh, she does, and it isn’t you. Not anymore,” I growl.
Chelsea has no idea how hard I’m fighting to keep my temper. I don’t want to frighten the kids or Connie. I stride towards Chelsea and hold out my arms towards Oz.
“Come here, buddy.” As much as possible, I keep my tone calm.
“I don’t think so,” Chelsea snaps, swinging him away from me.
My teeth grind together, but again, I have to think of my boy. “Oz, could you do Daddy a favour?”
His little face beams. “Yes, Daddy.” I don’t want to spoil his happiness. I know he’s missed his mum and I’ve got to try and handle this in the best way for him.
“Good boy. Daddy needs to talk to Mummy. Can you go with Connie and Josh for a little while?”
His little face drops as he cuddles up closer to Chelsea. “But I want to see Mom.”
Christ, I wish I could wipe that smirk off her face.
“I won’t be long. Then you can spend some time with her. Okay?”
