“Hey, Ms. Smith,” my doctor said as she entered the exam room. “It’s a pleasure seeing you again. What brings you here this morning?”
I explained to her that I had been feeling sick for the past few weeks and nothing I did seemed to help relieve it. She put a few orders and tests in that I needed to take. I had to do a urine test, blood work, and she gave me a physical examination. After my physical exam, she said she’d be right back. She was going to check my urine tests. Troy and I were sitting in the exam room waiting for her to come back. Neither one of us said anything at first. The air in the room was so thick you could cut it with a knife. Troy broke the silence between us first.
“Do you think you could be pregnant?”
“I don’t know. It’s a possibility,” I sighed.
“How do you feel about that?”
“I’m pretty positive that I’m scared shitless. How do you feel about it?”
“I’m kinda excited,” he said, causing me to look over at him. I needed to see if I could tell if he was serious or playing. “It would be pretty dope if we have a shorty together.”
“You’re serious, aren’t you?”
“Very,” he responded, looking into my eyes. “You don’t wanna have a shorty by me?”
Seeing the sincerity in his eyes, I couldn’t say what I wanted to say.
“It’s not that. We haven’t been together all that long to be having kids just yet.”
“Okay, and? What does that have to do with it?”
“I’m just saying. I’m not trying to end up being just another baby mama,” I admitted.
“Wow! That’s how you feel? You wouldn’t be just another baby mama. Sometimes you can be so negative, bae.”
“I’m just saying. Let’s just wait to see what the test results say before we get to arguing about something that may not even be happening.”
There was a small knock on the door, then Dr. Magee walked in with a wide grin on her face.
“Your urine results revealed that congratulations are in order,” she began as she continued to smile. “You’re pregnant!”
“Are you sure it’s not vertigo?” I asked just to be sure.
“I’m positive. We will still send the blood work out to the lab, but usually the urine tests we have are pretty accurate.”
I glanced over at Troy, and he was sitting there with this puppy dog look on his face. It was like he was trying to feel me out before reacting. When I took a closer look, I noticed that his eyes were starting to water.
“I’m pregnant?” I asked then laid my hand on my stomach. To say that I was shocked would be putting it mildly.
For the next couple of minutes, Dr. Magee put a referral in my chart for an ultrasound and gave me her recommendation on which prenatal pills to pick up. I didn’t need a prescription for them, but she recommended the brand that I should get. She also gave me the number to the Ob/Gyn that she recommended which was down the hall from her office. The whole time she was talking to me my heart was beating so loud that I barely heard what she was saying.
I couldn’t believe I was going to be someone’s mama.

Four months later
“Come here,”Kevin whispered in my ear, waking me up from my slumber.
Opening my eyes, trying to focus on the alarm clock, it took a few seconds to adjust my eyes so that I could be able to read the time. It was two minutes after five in the morning, a whole hour before we needed to be up for work, and Kevin was trying to get some morning action.
We took our relationship to the next level two days after he took the home HIV testing kit. The results came back negative, which I didn’t doubt, but he still went and got a blood test done at his doctor’s office for good measure. Kevin said he didn’t want me to have any reservations once we became intimate. The first time we made love, I was surprised by how in sync our bodies were. It was like we were moving as one. All of the nervousness I was feeling went away as he did his best to make sure I was comfortable the entire time. Occasionally he’d ask me if I was okay, and I appreciated that. The deal was if at any moment I wanted to stop, all I had to do was say so. I never wanted him tostop. We ended up making love that night on a level that left me feeling a way I had never felt before about Kevin.
I had fallen in love with him, yet still afraid to let my guard completely down. I was too afraid to get hurt. A small part of me was still afraid to let go. He was right when he said he was completely different than Justin. There was a time when I didn’t think anyone could please me physically as much as Justin had. But Kevin, he had Justin beat… on everything. Whenever he’d touch me, it sent tingling sensations up and down my entire body.
As scared as I was to have sex, my body yearned for it with him. Once we couldn’t hold off any longer, we opened Pandora’s box and had been going at it ever since. It had been such a long time since I last had sex, and I had hit the jackpot because it was well worth the wait.
