“I’ll fix that railing if you promise to let Shelby help you find a solution.”

“Course if I can convince my Shelby Bell to stay in Sandy Point then I’ll have you both here to fuss over me.”He laughed.“Not a bad solution—probably should’ve broke my hand sooner.”

For the first time since she’d arrived Wesley’s face broke into a big smile, the left side hitching up a little higher than the right, and a dimple poked into each of his cheeks. It was like the finale of a fireworks show and just like that she was back in high school falling for his easy charm, and he had no idea.

“My gran demanded I head out to her house this evening, but she mentioned she’s been on a baking spree during the storm. So I’ll try to bring you some pie tomorrow when I’m back to fix that railing.”

“You’re a good man, Sheriff Hart,” Pops said.“And your gran happens to make the best peach pie I’ve ever tasted.”

“You get some rest,” Wes said standing.

Shelby walked him to the door.

“I’m sure I can fix the railing,” she offered.

“I’ll be back either way tomorrow, but if you need anything tonight, please use that number.”

“Okay,” she breathed.

Then she watched as Wesley walked to his sheriff truck. His broad shoulders and tall, hard body wrapped in a crisp uniform were impossible to ignore.Wesley Hart had been the heartthrob at their high school and had grown into a gorgeous man who she suspected was garnering even more attention in this town than he did back in high school. What had she been thinking of hooking up with him?Now she was going to have to stay in town and see him everywhere. And if anyone else found out she’d been staying at his home during the storm, she was going to have a hard time pretending she hadn’t loved every second of it.

CHAPTER NINE

Wesley

Should Come with a Warning

Shelby Shepherd wasgoing to be a problem. Not because she was beautiful, and not because her dad was his nemesis, but because he couldn’t stop thinking about her.Wes didn’t close out all the crises in his office until after seven p.m.It was like each problem he solved produced two more. The only saving grace for having to work so late was that he found the private road out to his family estate had already been plowed.Someone had made sure to clear every path and both driveways at Gran’s and Dalton’s house. He knew it wasn’t Dalton since he’d been stuck at the hospital since the start of the blizzard.Which was probably why when he walked into his gran’s kitchen, he found his youngest brother Levi lying on the floor of the kitchen with a beer in each hand.

“Thirsty huh?”Wes said surveying the pies out on cooling racks, several covered dishes on the stove and a tabletop set for dinner.

“Gran said I couldn’t eat until you brought your butt around for dinner.Even though I spent all day shoveling and plowing our family land.So I’m drinking my dinner.”

Wes couldn’t help but laugh.

“A beer sounds good but I better not.People in this town can’t seem to stay out of ditches.”

“I’ll drink yours,” Levi said, sitting up and leaning against the back of the island.“Gran, the golden boy is here. Can we eat now?”Levi hollered and took another swig of his beer.“I’m going to be so sore tomorrow.”

“Any chance you wanna help me fix a railing out at Old Man Shepherd’s in the morning?”

“Damn, are you serious?”

“Ya, you’re the engineer.”

“I don’t even have a degree.I’m the shortstop.”

“Missed your calling.I’ll meet you there at eight a.m.”

“Fine, but you better bring the coffee.”

Wes peeked out into the hallway and spotted Gran sitting in the sunroom watching Missy painting in the space Gran had deemed the artist’s studio when Missy lived with her.

“I bet Gran is loving you all being home the last two weeks.”

“Ya, I’m not sure who is loving it more.I built Missy a VIP art studio, but she swears the lighting at Hart House is better than any lamp we could ever buy.”

“Well at least you all know where you’ll move once you retire from baseball.”
