Fine. My methods are too bloody for this crowd anyway.
“Well, I’m here for Katie and Julius’s engagement party. What brings you here?”
Another wave of surprise flickers across his features before a sleazy smile appears. “Same. We are the Mineav family lawyers. Let’s go get a drink at a bar, we can catch up.”
Catch up…catch-fucking-up.
The fucker extends his hand for her to take, but my Aurora pulls away, leaving him standing there like an idiot.
“Unfortunately, there’s nothing I want to know about your life. And you didn’t care about mine…well, ever. So, have a great evening.” She says all that with a saccharine sweet smile before turning back into my arms.
“Aurora,” Joey snaps like a child and finally looks my way. “Care to introduce your company?” He narrows his beady eyes that look nothing like Emett’s on me.
“Severin Minaev, Aurora’s fiancé.” I beat her to it and reach into my pocket for my phone that’s buzzing, Stella’s number on the screen.
“Stella?” Aurora’s body goes on full alert because Stella wouldn’t call if it wasn’t important.
“Hi, Dad! It’s me, Emett.” Both our shoulders sag with relief at the sound of his sheepish voice.
The little dude probably stole his nana’s phone.
“Hey, little man.” I smile. “Is everything okay?”
“Yeah, I just miss you and mom.” He pouts. “When are you coming back? Did you see the game tonight? Uncle Exton scoredtwo goals! Dad, when are you going to be back in the net? Nana says I need to eat carrots for dinner. I don’t want carrots. But don’t tell Mom, she thinks I love them.”
Aurora’s mouth drops as she mouths,That little stinker.
I chuckle at the both of them while Emett drops every thought he stored in his head for the whole day.
“Emett,” Stella shouts in the background.
“Oops, I think Nana is mad,” he whispers.
“We’ll be home tomorrow morning, Em. Tell Nana to go easy on you.” I chuckle as we hear Stella go at it with Emett and the call breaks off.
“What do you think about getting Emett a phone so he can call me anytime I’m away at games?”
“Oh dear Lord…” Aurora sighs.
“Who was that?” Joey asks, his voice heavy with suspicion.
Both of us forgot he was still here.
“My son,” I tell him. “Lychik, ready to go to our boy?”
“Yes, please. Let me just use a restroom really quick and we can say goodbye to your cousin.”
I nod and lead her toward the restroom entrance which is conveniently right by the bar.
“Whiskey neat,” I tell the barman, and just as he sets the glass in front of me, Denis appears again. Jesus, I’ve had enough of reunions for one night.
“It wasn’t like that,” he says as I lift my questioning gaze to his. “Why I did this. It wasn’t what you think…and one day, I hope you’ll understand.” Just as fast as he shows up, he disappears, and I’m about to follow and figure out what he means when Joey Kloss stomps his way to the restroom hallway.
Oh, fuck no.
I let you have your word, Lychik, now’s my turn.
“What did you forget in the ladies’ room, Joey?” I ask, taking a sip.
