“Oh, no. I’m winging it most of the time. You just love me too much to see it. Have a great day.”

“You too.”

I fought my way to the exit quickly and managed to get out just in time. I took a deep breath as I looked at my office building.

My phone beeped with a message as I entered, and I figured it might be Mom with some more words of wisdom, so I checked it. It was actually from Beckett.

Beckett: Let me know when you have time for a call.

I bit the inside of my cheek as I made my way into the building. What did he want to discuss? I said hello to Christine, our receptionist, then headed to my office and sat down behind mydesk, preparing to respond. Did he want us to talk in a professional capacity, or was it something else?

Damn, Josh was right. Mixing business and pleasure just muddled things.

Then Mom’s words came to mind:“Sometimes the most complicated situations can turn out to be wonderful.”Regardless, I needed to be professional.

Piper: I’m available now, or we can schedule it for later.

Beckett called me the very next second.

“Good morning.”

“Hi.”

“Are you at the office already?” he asked.

“Yes, I am.”

“Perfect. I slept on it, and we’re going with the expensive scenario.”

So, it was a professional call after all.

“That was fast.”

“I went through everything again this morning before Charlotte woke up,” he explained. “It’s the best option.”

“Then I’ll put everything in motion.”

“Perfect. And you’ll chat with my team about the next steps?”

“Yes. You want to be copied on all the communication?”

“Of course.”

“Then I’ll do that. I’m so excited. This went way better than I expected.”

“Did it?” Beckett asked.

There was a subtle change in his tone. I swallowed hard, jumping up from behind my desk and pacing around my office. I looked out the window, but I didn’t have much of a view.

“Yes. I never thought I’d manage to get through all those scenarios before dinner.”

“I never thought I’d kiss you,” he replied.

Oh, I knew it. That was why his tone had changed. “Beckett, I’m not even sure what to say.”

“You don’t have to. I keep replaying those moments in my mind.”

A shiver went through me. “So do I,” I admitted.
