“Sure!” Emotion clogged my throat as I looked at the cute bundle in his arms. After closing the front door, I took off my shoes and followed him through the penthouse.
“By the way, I bought a rattle for the baby. Just a little something,” I said, feeling awkward. But Beckett responded kindly, and that made me feel good.
“That’s very thoughtful of you.”
“Where would you like me to put it?”
“How about on that ottoman next to you. I’ll bring it upstairs later.”
As I placed it where he suggested, he exclaimed, “Everything’s such a mess!”
The place was gorgeous and huge, and yes, somewhat discombobulated. Several corners were a bit cluttered with baby stuff, but so what?
“Hey, you’ve got a tiny human to take care of. Obviously part of this home is going to have a tiny human aesthetic.”
Beckett started to laugh, making his whole chest move. For a brief second, I thought the baby would wake up, but nope.
He grinned as if reading my thoughts. “Don’t worry. If I carry her, she sleeps like an angel no matter what I do. The problem starts when I put her down.”
“I see.”
“One of my grandmothers was here today—she’s been helping out while I search for a nanny. But Charlotte only wants me.”
“Youareher dad,” I said. He looked so cute with the baby.
“Do you want a drink?”
“You can just tell me where stuff is.”
“Don’t worry. I’ve become very proficient at doing things with one hand.”
I nodded. “I bet you have.”
“What can I tempt you with? I’ve got a fully stocked bar.”
“What are you having?” I asked.
“Coffee.”
I pressed my lips together.
He laughed. “Don’t judge. Life with a newborn is strange. She slept so much during the day that I’m prepping for a night of activity.”
“Then I’ll have a coffee with you. It doesn’t really affect me, unfortunately. Or fortunately. Depends how you look at it.”
“All right.”
I glanced around the room. “Where can I put my laptop?”
“On the dining table.” He nodded in that direction. “We’ll review everything there.”
I deposited it on one corner and followed him to the kitchen. The baby started to fuss in his arms, and he used both hands to hold her in front of him, jiggling her lightly. She immediately quieted down again.
“That’s a neat trick!”
He looked at me with the most devastating smile.
You can’t find him attractive just because he’s a dad, damn it. That’s just odd.
