“Three or four weeks. I took the test because I missed my period. Not even sure how it happened.”
“It doesn’t matter.”
She raised a brow. “You’re not mad?”
“No, Piper.” Clearly she needed some more reassuring. I ran a hand through her hair. “I promise I’ll take good care of the baby. But we’ve got some time until he or she gets here. In the meantime, I’m going to focus all my efforts on spoiling you from morning to night and making sure you don’t want for anything.”
She closed her eyes, smiling. “Oh, Beckett, I didn’t even dare to dream that you’d be so happy.”
“Of course I am. I love you!”
She opened her eyes.
“This is the start of something absolutely beautiful.”
“You’re not afraid it’s too fast?”
I shook my head emphatically. “Not even one bit. It’s how I fell in love with you: hard and fast. If anything, this is just like us. Areyouafraid?”
She shook her head. “Not anymore. After everything you said, I just know that we can do everything together.”
“Yes, we can. I promise you that we can. Life will change, Piper, but for the better. You and I will be so good at this. Loving each other, loving him or her.” I put my hand on her belly again. “This new chapter is going to be unlike anything before.”
She put her arms on my shoulders, dropping her forehead slightly, and I kissed it. I kept her close to me, putting a hand on the small of her back, pressing her belly against me.
“You truly know all the right things to say.”
“It’s how I feel. I actually thought about what I wanted to tell you in the car, but I couldn’t get my thoughts straight. I knew the words would come once I saw you, though.Andmy promise to take care of you starts right now.”
I swooped her up into my arms. She cried out and then said, “Oh my God, Beckett, you’ve got to be a bit careful with these things.”
“Are you feeling sick?” I asked.
“No, no, I’m good.”
I carried her all the way to the bedroom, putting her on the bed. “Now, tell me everything you need, and I’ll bring it to you here so you can rest.”
She laughed. “You do know that I’m not on bed rest, right?”
“You’ve been sick today and are clearly still recovering. Do you want me to cook for you? Can I bring you something to drink?”
“I want to cuddle,” she said, patting the bed.
I grinned. “At your service, ma’am.”
She moved to the middle of the bed and turned onto one side. I lay down behind her, wrapping my arm around her waist.
“I like this position,” I told her.
“Oh yeah. You’re so good at spooning.”
“What’s that?”
“You know, we look like two spoons.”
I frowned. “We look nothing like spoons.”
“Oh, Beckett. It’s just a saying.”
