Oh, this man. He had his hands full, and I didn’t want him to worry—though I didn’t really know how I was going to approach all this. So, I resorted to just texting him back.
Piper: I’m good. Don’t worry about anything.
I wanted to add that we should talk, but it sounded too ominous in a text. I had to think about what to tell him. My heart started beating faster again with anticipation.
I moved from my desk to the comfy couch I had in front of my bookshelves. I had a break until my next client call, and I debated calling Beckett and telling him everything. But instead of doing that, I called my mom. I held a hand on my belly, already feeling a connection with my baby. How crazy was that? I was carrying a little treasure, someone I’d wanted for a long time.
“Good morning, darling,” Mom answered.
“Hey, Mom. Do you have a few minutes?”
“Sure. I’m running late to work, but I’d rather talk with you until I arrive at the office. What’s going on?”
“I’m pregnant,” I blurted. Yep, just like that.
She gasped. “Oh my goodness. Congratulations, darling. That’s such happy news. Glad I’m on Bluetooth or I might havelanded myself in the ditch!” She was laughing uncontrollably, and that made me smile.
“I know, right?” Oh yeah. I wasfinallyhaving a baby.
“How are you feeling?” That was my mom. Not judgmental, just caring about all involved. God, I loved my parents.
“Like crap. That’s how I realized I might be pregnant in the first place.”
“Oh, darling. I can call in sick today. I’ll drop by and take care of you.”
“Mom, that’s really sweet of you, but I’m basically just nauseous. I’ll be fine. I just wanted you to know.”
“Well, I’m thrilled, my dear. And I bet Beckett is taking good care of you, right?” Mom asked.
I sighed. “I’m actually at home. I haven’t told him yet.”
“Why not? So, am I the first one to know?”
I laughed. “Yes, you are.”
“Well, as happy as I feel about that, why didn’t you tell Beckett? You should’ve told him first, dear.”
I brought my knees to my chest, hugging my legs. “I’m not sure. This morning was a bit crazy. I did my test, and then I had to leave. Charlotte had a blowout.”
Mom didn’t reply right away, then sighed. “Sounds like you’re making up excuses.”
Yep. Right to the punch.
“Mom!”
“I’m sorry, but it does. Why didn’t you tell him?”
“He and I haven’t been going out for that long, just two months, and now I’m pregnant. I mean, he practically just found out that he’s got Charlotte.”
“The circumstances are completely different.”
“I know. But I’m afraid that he’ll pull a Fred on me and say he’s not ready for this.” After I said that, I realized how unfair it was.
“No one is truly ready to have a child. I speak from experience.”
“Mom!I’myour child.”
“And you have been very much wanted. We tried for many years. But even so, once we found out, we were scared. That’s normal. Even if Beckett doesn’t react well in the beginning, it’s understandable. But you really should tell him.”
