“You haven’t told them you’re…”

“Seeing us?”Knox filled in when Jesse trailed off.

“No.”Chloe glanced up.“I didn’t think you’d want that.Besides…”

“Besides?”Knox prompted.

Chloe spread queso on a tortilla.“Mo warned me away from you.”

Jesse blinked.“She did?”

“The week before you started demo on the restaurant. She thought I was flirting with you too much.”She piled on meat, onions, and more queso.“So I figured it was best to keep things quiet.”

“Sure, that makes sense.”

“Besides, we don’t talk about it.”

“Don’t talk about what?”

“My sex life.”She wrinkled her nose at Knox.“If Mo knows I’m seeing someone, she’d have to tell my mother.”

“Have to?”

“It’s like a sister code,” Chloe explained.“Besides, Mo is awful at keeping secrets, and Mom is excellent at digging them up.It’s her superpower.”

“You don’t tell your mother when you’re seeing someone?”

She glanced at Jesse.“If things get serious, sure. But right off the bat?”She shook her head.“Not a good idea.”

“Why not?”

“Annie—that’s my mom—she’s…well, you know how most people have boundaries?”

Knox reached for the guacamole.“Sure.”

“She doesn’t.”

“Ah.”

“Hey,” Jesse protested, watching Knox scoop guac onto his plate.“That’s half the container.”

“It’s a quarter of the container,” Knox corrected.“You’ve already eaten half.”

“It’s half of what’s left,” Jesse muttered.

Enjoying their byplay, Chloe bit into her fajita.“You guys are so cute.”

“I’m cute,” Jesse corrected, frowning at the container.“He’s a guacamole thief.”

Knox scooped up guac and bit into it with exaggerated yummy noises.

“You’re so mean,” Jesse complained.

“You came twice and I only came once,” Knox reminded him.

“Oh.”Jesse thought for a moment, then shrugged.“Okay, you can have the guac.”

“So cute,” Chloe sighed.
