“Oooh, food,” Carly moaned, passing us to get herself a bowl from the cupboard. I glanced at Jami, whose expression was annoyed, but I knew she wouldn’t say anything. She was too passive. Too sweet of a person.

“Did you have a good day, Carly?” I asked, watching her struggle with the bread knife. She turned to me, causing her medium, pink-dyed hair to fall into her eyes.

“Yes, it was excellent,” she said.

“Are you drunk already?” Jami asked, and Carly groaned.

“Not drunk enough, actually. I was just stopping by to ask if you two wanted to hit up the bar.”

“This late?” Jami said, glancing at her watch. I looked at mine. It was barely eight.

“It's the first day of the semester, and everyone will be there,” Carly insisted, leaning against the counter as she slurped her soup. “Come on, girls, live a little. Besides,” she waggled an eyebrow at me. “You look like you could use a good time, Renee. That ER is taking a toll on your sense of humor.”

I looked at Jami, who pursed her lips like an annoyed mother. While waiting for her to answer, I turned to Carly and smiled.

“I'm in.”

“That’s what I'm talking about.” Carly winked, then turned and rinsed her bowl in the sink. Then she turned back to Jami. “What do you say? Want to break out of that fucking shell of yours?”

“Ugh, fine.” Jami sighed heavily, looking anything but pleased. “Let me just get dressed.”

I finished my soup, excited to go out for a night on the town with my new roommates. This would be a good time, and nothing would impede the fun I was about to have.

Nothing at all.

Chapter 4

Matt

“Hey, handsome, couldI get you another round? On the house.”

I looked up at the bartender who had spoken. She was cute, this one, a hippy of sorts, with dark dreadlocks and striking blue eyes. She was smiling at me, dimpled cheeks dramatic under the pale light of the barroom. I glanced at the name tag near her perky breasts—Alyssa.

“What do you think, gentlemen?” I asked, turning to the boys flanking me on either side. “Could we use another round?”

“Only as long as it was coming from you, baby,” Jake said, his lip curling as he winked at her. Aaron grinned on my other side, a red tint rising to his cheeks.
