I glanced at the clock on my dashboard and laughed. “I’m on my way to pick her up right now for a date. But I promise I will call you tomorrow and tell you all about it.”
“You better,” Mom teased. “I love you, J.”
“Love you too, Mom.”
Chapter 22
Macey
He picked me up atfour, right on time, coming to the door to carry my bag with a tender kiss that sent sparks out the end of my toes.
“You look beautiful,” he said, openly checking me out. I’d opted for a white sundress with tan boots, and a warm, gray suede jacket. It wasn’t the sexiest thing I could have worn, but since I didn’t yet know what we were going to do, I wanted to at least be comfortable.
“I just threw something together,” I admitted, reaching for the St. Patrick’s Day scarf that I’d had to talk Kylie out of burning. It was puke green and fuzzy, just the sort of thing one might pull out of the back of their dead great grandmother’s closet and toss into the Goodwill bin. But I loved it.
“You could wear a potato sack and still look just as beautiful, Macey.”
“Flattery will get you everywhere, Jayce.”
“I’ve noticed.” Winking at me with a teasing grin, he tossed my pack over his shoulder, grabbed my hand, and led me to the car. He opened the passenger’s door for me, and I slid in as he closed it gently behind me, opening the trunk briefly to stow my bag back there.
“So,” I said as he got back into the car and turned the heat up. “Are you going to tell me yet where we’re going or what we’re doing?”
“Why? And ruin the surprise?”
“I should have told you earlier than this, but I don’t like surprises.”
“I don’t believe you.” Jayce took my hand and raised my knuckles to his lips to kiss them. A hot flush curled up my neck and down my spine, and goosebumps rose on my arms. It wasn’t from the cold, though.
“I guess I should say that I like good surprises,” I corrected. “Is this a good surprise?”
“I guess it depends on how the night goes,” said Jayce mysteriously, and I stuck my tongue out at him and wrinkled my nose.
“Is there a reason it wouldn’t go well?”
“You’ll just have to wait and see, Mace. Jeez.”
