I wanted to tell her that it had been the same for me, but I resisted, not wanting to come off more desperate than I already felt.
“I can’t believe you got up this early just to come and watch me practice,” I said. “None of the other player’s girlfriends do that. At least, not that I’ve ever seen.”
“Girlfriend,” Macey repeated. “Yeah, that’s still a foreign word to me.”
“But you’re acting the part so well,” I insisted playfully. “Have you taken the class?”
“Which class, How to be the Perfect Girlfriend 101?”
“Yes, that one,” I said. “It teaches a woman her place in a new relationship. Like showing up to practice and bringing coffee for her mate.”
“That’s the part I studied last night after you left,” mused Macey. “How did I do? Did I get an A?”
“I mean, yeah.” I shrugged and nodded, pretending to mull this over. “But it’s the next class I’m really looking forward to you taking. That’s when you’ll start on the cooking and cleaning requirements.”
“Actually,” Macey said with a mischievous grin. “That’s the one class I require for anyone wanting to dateme.”
“Woman.” I pulled Macey to a stop in the middle of the sidewalk, ignoring the groans of the other students as they had to make their way around us. “I will do anything for you, even if it means cooking a meal that may or may not be any good at all.”
“Oh, and see, I always wanted to end up with a guy that cooks well,” Macey said with a shrug. “I guess this just isn’t going to work, Jayce.” Still giggling, she glanced at her watch, and her face fell.
“Shit, I’m late for class. I gotta go.”
“Are you sure you don’t want to skip?” I asked as Macey popped up on her toes again to kiss me. She lingered for a second longer than she should have, then stepped away towards the building of her next class, leaving me silently begging for more.
“Of course, I want to skip,” she called. “And I bet so do you. But we can’t. Because we’re adults.”
“But I don’t wanna be an adult,” I complained as Macey walked away. “I want to skip class and hang out behind the bleachers and maybe even smoke some weed with my new girlfriend.”
Macey flushed, and a few passersby chuckled, but she didn’t stop walking. “See you later, Gregory.”
“Hopefully sooner rather than later, Britton.”
