“Thank you, I don’t think I’ll ever need it, but thank you. Same here, you can stay here if you ever come back. If I don’t hear from the lawyers I’ve already contacted by Tuesday, I’ll call them back, and I agree with you. I think an annulment would be best for our situation.”
“Agreed. When I get home, I’ll talk to my lawyer.” He paused and studied her before he sighed. “I wish you luck, Wanda.” He leaned down and kissed her cheek, then before they could say anything else, he turned on his heel, hurried down the stairs and waved over his shoulder as he left. Wanda sighed and went into her apartment and knowing her parents had a key, she made her way to her bedroom and settled in for the night.
Chapter 14
Wanda was in the back of her shop rinsing the towels from her day at the pottery wheel. She was done for the day, and she was happy with what she’d done. Her phone rang and without looking at the ID she answered.
“Hello?”
“Wanda?” a sexy male voice asked.
“Yes.”
“What are you doing?”
“Um, rinsing towels. Who is this?”
“Oh, sorry, it’s Christopher. Christopher Evans.”
“Oh hi. How are you?” It had been almost four months since the last time she’d seen him.
“Good. I thought I’d call you because I’m standing in your driveway and I don’t have a lot of clothes with me. I didn’t want to scare you when I walked up to your shop.”
Wanda actually turned and saw him standing there, and she snorted a laugh. She hung up and waved him up. Willow watched as he approached and admired his long legs, muscular thighs in his jeans and the breadth of his shoulders. She looked down and saw she was done and walked over and turned off the hose.
“Hey,” she said as he arrived closer to her, and reached down and began wringing the towels out. She noticed that he still stood a few feet away. Once she was done, she picked them up, and she asked if he wanted to come up. He nodded, then stopped.
“If you don’t mind, why don’t you go on up and do your thing and I’ll grab my bag.”
“Okay.” She was confused as to why he would bring an overnight bag with him, but she only wanted a shower, so she did as he suggested. Thirty minutes later, she joined him in her kitchen and grinned when he passed her a tall glass of iced lemon water. “So, what are you doing here? I haven’t seen or heard from you in the last four months.”
“Didn’t your lawyer tell you that we have a court date on Monday?”
“Oh shit. I forgot. Yeah, Tony said the judge wanted to talk to both of us.”
“My lawyer’s flying in on Sunday, and he’ll meet me there. But I thought I’d come down a couple days early. Would you like to go out to dinner?”
“Oh wow. I hadn’t realized it was getting that late,” Wanda said as she looked at the clock on the microwave and saw it was going on seven. Just then her stomach gave a loud rumble. “Sure, did you have anything in mind?”
“I was thinking about the place we went to the last time I was here. The Dragon’s Den?”
“Perfect. I don’t know how busy it’ll be on a Friday night, but we can go if you’d like.”
“I’d like.” He grinned and was surprised when she stood and said she was ready to go. After locking up, they made their way to his SUV and settled in.
“When did you leave New York? Since this is the same SUV we rode in four months ago, I’m assuming you drove?”
“I did. And I left Monday afternoon. It only took four days to get here. I hope you don’t mind, but I thought I’d stay the weekend with you, check out the area, then go to court on Monday and leave Tuesdaymorning,” he said as he pulled out into traffic. “Depending on what the judge says.”
“Okay. Do you know what the judge wants to see us about? I asked my lawyer, and he didn’t have a clue.”
“Same here. My lawyer didn’t have a clue either. But since the request came from the judge, we’re here.”
“Okay.” She watched as he handled his SUV and in minutes they were pulling into the restaurant, and they saw that the parking lot was crowded. They went in and only had to wait for fifteen minutes before they were seated. What surprised Wanda was that Christopher ordered her lemon water with extra lemons. She opted to stay at the table while he went to fill his plate first from the tables offering their selections. When he returned, she rose and went to fill her plate. She came back with two plates. One loaded with salad and one with fruit. “What?” she asked when Christopher frowned at her.
“I’m just wondering why you didn’t get something else.” He pointed to his plate that had beef, mashed potatoes, and vegetables.
“I know it doesn’t look like it, but I like to eat healthily. I eat meat, but in places like this, I like fruit and salad. Besides it’s just me and cooking a big meal isn’t always in the cards.”
