“And the pack?”
“I’ll go over everything in it with a fine-tooth comb.”He shook his head when she was going to speak.“I’ll wear gloves and document everything.Did you see the contents of that pack?”
“Only a little.I thought I saw several rolled bundles of bills.”
“Yeah, I did too, I believe there are drugs already bagged, ready for resale.”
“Depending on how much, that’s going to be a felony, right?”
“That’s what I’m hoping.Depending on what else I find, I’m going to have to contact Kessler and Flynn to get this to them.I would like to have tests run on the type of drugs I spotted.Oh, and don’t worry, I’ll make sure I take pictures of all the bills, especially the serial numbers.”
“I know we’re just starting out here, but maybe we should talk to the big bosses about the possibility of having them reach out for someone from a local office to be as our go between.”She shook her head and held up her hand.“I know it will be hard to trust someone, but I would feel better if we had someone closer.”She sighed as she finished her breakfast then poured them each another cup of coffee.“I know there’s an ATF office over in Des Moines, and I believe but don’t quote me on this, but I believe the DEA office is closed.You’ll have to look into it.”
“Thanks for that information, I will put it on my list.”He tapped the side of his head, then rose to clear the table.As he did that, Petra pulled the sheets from the washer.
“Do you mind if I hang the linens out on the line?”
“No, I actually like the smell of them drying in the sun all day.”
“Me too, could you remember to take them down before dark?”
“Yes, and I’ll even make the bed.”He waggled his brows and she laughed as she shook her head at him and took the sheets out to the clothes line.She cleaned the house and got something for dinner in the crockpot and before she left for work, she walked up to him and kissed him deeply.
“I’ll see you shortly after nine.”
“Okay, and I’ll let you know what I find, if anything.I’m going into this investigation of Eddie that today will be a fact-finding mission and the information won’t come trickling in until the end of the week.”
“Okay, please be careful, and remember to use gloves.You don’t know what type of drugs are in there.I know I don’t have to tell you this, but you might want to wear a face mask also.Just to err on the side of caution.”
“I agree.”He gathered her in his arms and gave her a kiss to hold her over and laughed when he had to hold her upright afterward.It pleased him that his kisses made her knees weak.
He stood on the front porch with a fresh cup of coffee as he watched her climb into her vehicle and drive away.
Chapter 17
Several hours later, Paul leaned back in his chair with a heavy sigh, “Son of a bitch,” he whispered to himself.He sat there in stunned silence, and to clear his head of what he had just learned, he rose to get himself another cup of coffee, and ended up having to make a fresh pot.He took the time to use the facilities, then shook his head again.To mull over what he just learned, he left the office in the back of the shop, walked to the backyard to check out the sheets, and ended up taking them down.He went inside to make the bed, and folded the other sheets to place in the linen closet in the hall.He knew Petra would yell at him because he could fold a fitted sheet with no problem.He always laughed at her when she would get frustrated at not being able to fold it, she ended up wadding it into a ball and stuffing it in the closet.
