Alester: Are you sure that’s a good idea? You could tip off Taylor if they’re working together.
James: Are you saying they’re working together?
Alester: Obviously not. You can read, can’t you?
James: Great, smart ass. I want the number.
Alester: Give me time.
I scoff. I know damn well his software can get phone numbers instantly. He’s just trying to delay the inevitable.
Thomas hands me a black coffee before he pulls into a parking spot. I sip the scalding liquid as I wait. Thankfully my phone buzzes a minute later with a text.
Alester: Here’s the link for his address. Don’t approach without talking to Ryder about legal implications.
Yeah, I’m not an idiot.Time to follow this rat to its hole.
This is ridiculous. I’ve been sitting outside Taylor’s shitty apartment for hours, and he still hasn’t bothered to leave yet. At this point, I don’t think he will and I should just try again tomorrow.
It’s starting to get dark out when I pull my phone out of my pocket. “Let’s just head back towards the apartment.” Thomas starts the vehicle and pulls out of the apartment parking lot. I shoot a text to Alester, thoroughly irritated.
James: Number.Now.
Alester: Rude. 567-243-8972
Finally. It hasn’t even been a full day yet, and I’m itching to get back to Alex. She booked my cabin for an entire week, so I need to figure this shit out. Fast. A week without Alex sounds like torture.
Alester: Don’t do anything stupid.
James: Like fall in love?
Alester: I mean…depends if she knows about Taylor or not.
James: Doubtful.
I open a new message. Fully ignoring the new messages pouring in from Alester and a few from Ryder.
James: How’s the cabin?
567-243-8972: Who is this?
James: I told you we are inevitable. Don’t tell me you can forget about me that fast?
I stare at my phone anticipating the buzzing sensation of the response from Alex. She takes her time, and it almost feels like it’s intentional. Especially after getting to know her this weekend.
Alexandra: Hmm. Odd way to show you care by bailing in the middle of the night.
James: Let me make it up to you.
Alexandra: I’m listening…
Okay. I have to make this good. I can’t risk losing her now. I need time to think.
James: Tell me when you’re home. I have a surprise.
