(Saunders)
I read through her application and results. There was a reason she was last on the list. Her results were good but lower than her fellow interns. She had a strange gap in her studies, but that was none of my business.
All I knew was that Anders would be keeping a close eye on howI dealt with this. Elizabeth Gordon-Bettencourt was now part and parcel of whether I was promoted.
I tugged at my collar and blew out a few quick, short breaths while scanning the rest of the emails. What else was urgent?
Everything was urgent.
Time for my favorite side quest:Coffee.
I grabbed my phone and pushed up from my seat, relieved to be giving my restless legs something to do. I rushed toward the kitchen while opening the app I used to chat with Lily. Maybe I could tell her about this. Maybe she could make me feel better about it all. She was one of the very few people I shared my life with—albeit cryptically.
I navigated to our chat, a smile already creeping onto my face. Drifting around the corner, I slammed into something.
Someone.
My phone flew out of my hands, and instinctively, my arms shot out, curling around the person before they tumbled. “I’m sorry, I…” I started, but the words got stuck in my mouth. It wasn’t just anyone I was pressed up against.
It was my intern.
Elizabeth Gordon-Bettencourt met my gaze with gray eyes so striking that it triggered my fight-or-flight response.

@pancakesareelite:
theanswerisno is not a name.
What am I supposed to call you?
@theanswerisno:
Whatever you want
@pancakesareelite:
All I know about you is that you’re a Legend of Zelda fan. Should I call you Zelda? Your avatar is a picture of Link. I could call you Link.
@theanswerisno:
I try not to share too much with strangers on the internet
@pancakesareelite:
I’ll tell you mine if you tell me yours
@theanswerisno:
The answer is no, Pancakes
@pancakesareelite:
Okay, Zelda
