Meg looked at me.
I threw Amy an apologetic glance. “I don’t know. I didn’t hear her come in. She’s really, really quiet.”
“Sneaking up the stairs,” Jo said.
“Not sneaking,” Amy protested. “Walking.”
“Quietly,” Meg pointed out.
“You and Trey.” Jo shook her head. “I did not see that coming.”
Because we’d been blinded by his devotion to Jo.
“They like the same things,” I said. “And Trey’s always looked after Amy.”
“He looks after all of us,” Jo said. “We’ve been friends since we were kids.”
“More than friends. Family,” Meg said.
“But not in a creepy, incestuous way,” Amy said.
Jo grinned. “You don’t feel like you’re kissing your brother?”
“No. Jo!”
“Just asking.”
My sisters were like hawks, circling. I held still as a rabbit, as if any movement would divert their attention to me. At least they weren’t asking about Colt.
“Please ignore the aunties,” Alec said to the pink-haired girl.
“Are you kidding? This is better than watchingThe Bachelor.”
“You’re not mad? That we’re dating?” Amy asked Jo.
“Of course not. I want you to be happy. You and Trey both. I always felt guilty I couldn’t...” Jo broke off, vigorously polishing a bar glass.
“So, are you two serious?” Meg asked Amy.
Amy shrugged. “There are feelings. Obviously. We care about each other. But we both agreed we’re not going into this with any expectations.”
“That’s probably wise. What?” Jo asked when Meg shot her a look. “Trey’s always been a man whore. I wouldn’t want Amy to get hurt.”
“Or Trey, either.” I shifted my gaze to Amy. “I mean, you’re going back to New York soon.”
“I was. I mean, I am. Next week.”
“I hear abut,” Meg said.
“But...” Another shrug. “I keep thinking about what you said the other day. About how it would be cheaper if I moved my business to Bunyan.”
Meg frowned as she folded a napkin into a precise rectangle. “Does this decision have anything to do with Trey?”
“There is no decision. I haven’t decided anything yet. But he did show me a building. An empty storefront near the tobacco warehouse.”
“The old Shoe Box store?” Meg asked. “That’s a good location.”
Amy crinkled her nose. Adorably, the way she did everything. “You sound like Aunt Phee. But itisa beautiful space. I always planned on opening my own shop. Just not here. Or so soon.”
