Halfway to the top, my fear turns to excitement. Then back to fear when I make the mistake of looking down.
Vaughn continues to check on me as we climb. If he really is scared of heights, then he’s doing a good job of hiding it.
“Almost there,” he says.
“This seems far enough.”
“You’ve got this, Lacey.” I can hear the smile in his response.
“Who is the cheerleader now?”
“Go Lacey Go.”
“I’m going to need you to repeat that with some pom-poms.” The words are no sooner out of my mouth than I realize I’ve reached the top.
He stares down at me with a smirk and extends one hand. I place my right palm in his and he pulls me up with him.
“I did it.” A thrill shoots through me, but when I glance around my knees buckle. “Holy crap, this is really far up.”
Vaughn chuckles and follows me around the circle platform. You can see for miles in every direction.
I stop at a spot that looks out into dense pine trees that reach up toward the sky. I sit at the edge where a metal barrier runs around the perimeter of the tank almost like a guard rail. “Thank you for helping me cross another item off my list.”
He takes a seat next to me. “Any time.”
We stare out in silence, the wind whipping around us and the stars twinkling above us.
“Hey, I just thought of something,” I say, lifting my head from his shoulder.
“What’s that?”
“Number ten.” I lean over and kiss him.
