He and Cassian make plans to catch up after the new year and then he’s gone. The interview that could change my life forever is over.
I find Simon the moment Jack leaves, kicking off my heels and racing up the stairs. He’s working at his laptop in the library, and I go straight into his arms.
“Kit-kat, what’s wrong? Did the interview go poorly?”
“You and Cass never got to do that. You didn’t get to announce your mating.”
“Oh, Junes. What you just did? The whole media circus that your life is about to become? I don’t want that. I never have. I have everything I want, right here with you and Cassian.”
I snuggle against him.
“So do I.”
And I wish with all my heart that that wasn’t a lie.
“Hey, Hawthorn’s been blowing up Cass’s phone for the past hour. He’s worried about you.”
Oh saints, my brother. He sent me out into the snow to escape a monster and hasn’t heard from me since.
I grab my phone and drop into one of the cushy leather armchairs in the library.

I let out a deep breath, my thumbs hovering over my phone screen.>
My brother sends me a string of exploding-head emojis.

I snap a quick selfie showing my bite and send it to him.

Three dots appear and then disappear as my brother types and then erases his message. Finally, he replies.

Speaking of conniving Roses, I really want to ask him if he knows anything about Willow, but another message pings through before I can.

And saints above, do I hope that’s true. That I can be brave and strong as I weather the storm to come.
