“You’re drunk,” he says.

“So are you.”

“Diffrence is I handle it better.”

I laugh, stepping right into his space now, because I’m tired and angry and maybe a little desperate for something I shouldn’t want.

“Oh yes, Rothwell. You’re clearly the picture of stability.”

He takes another drag, eyes dark.

“What the hell do you want, Jamie?”

“I came out here to breathe. You are the one who followed me.”

“I came out here to smoke.”

“Then smoke somewhere else.”

“No.”

The word lands between us heavy and deliberate.

We stare at each other.

The world goes quiet.

Only the river moves.

His gaze drops to my mouth.

Barely – but I see it.

And holy shit, my heart stumbles.

He steps closer.

Just a fraction.

Just enough for the heat of him to hit me.

His hand comes up like he’s about to grab my jaw. He hesitates. His breath ghosts across my lips, warm and laced with alcohol, tobacco and a hint of mint.

We’re close.

Too close.

One tiny moment and we’ll—

Lex freezes.

His eyes snap to mine, wide for the first time ever. His lips part. His mouth is right fucking there.

Then—

“No.”

He jerks back like he’s been burned.
