“Good for you,” I replied icily, wandering away from the bar, not even daring to turn to check if Becca was following. Luckily, she was.
“I’m going to have to keep a tally.” She grinned. I didn’t reply, just downed my shot of Sambuca, Becca quickly following suit and we both sipped at our vodka and orange juice.
“Is it anything like you were imagining at the moment?” I asked, laughing. Becca shook her head before leaning in to shout in my ear.
“Not at all.” She paused as a group of men passed us and she watched them before turning back to me. “How thefuckhave you been single for so long?”
“How do you mean?” I asked, brow furrowing in confusion.
“I’ve seen at least ten guys giving you the eye and we’ve only been here ten minutes!” Becca laughed.
I felt my cheeks flush and I took a large gulp of my drink before I replied. “And how many out of those ten were good looking?” I asked, cocking an eyebrow.
Becca hesitated. “Okay, so maybe like, one?” she giggled. “If you had the lights off.”
“My point exactly.” I grinned before suddenly being caught off-guard by a guy checking me out from across the other side of the room. “Although, that guy is alright,” I muttered into Becca’s ear.
“Where?” she asked, spinning her head around comically.
“Don’t look!” I scolded her. “He’s over by the speakers.”
“Ooh!” Becca squealed over the loud bass. “The guy with the green t-shirt on?”
“Yeah, with the short hair,” I replied.
She nodded enthusiastically. “I don’t really like guys with hair that short,” Becca mumbled, and I shook my head.
“Me either, but as far as this place goes, he’s quite reasonable.” I grinned, accidentally catching the guy’s eye again. In my peripheral vision I noticed him nudge a guy next to him. His friend was also attractive and a bit more like my type. He had dark hair and a lip piercing. They both glanced over at me, the friend grinned at me before leaning in to mutter something back to the guy in the green shirt.
“I like this song,” Becca chirped, distracting me. She started dipping and writhing in time with the music. “Is that guy still over there?” Becca asked, sneaking a quick glance over her shoulder. I dared not look over and downed the last of my drink instead. I was tempted to ask Becca if we could move somewhere else.
“His mate is checking you out now too.” She winked at me.
“I’m not interested,” I replied, wiping my mouth.
“Why not? His friend is even sexier,” Becca replied, glancing quite blatantly at them.
“Still not interested.” I smiled and Becca pouted at me.
“You wouldn’t even dance with them?”
I sighed. “Let’s just see what happens, alright?”
Becca clapped her hands together happily before gesturing to my empty glass. “Shall we get another?” I nodded enthusiastically. I was definitely going to need a few more drinks down me if dancing with strangers was going to be on the agenda. I grabbed her wrist before she headed back towards the bar, we’d gotten served at the first time.
“Let’s, uh, not go to that one. There’s another bar downstairs near the dance floor,” I muttered in her ear. “I don’t want to have to tell that barman to fuck off again.” Becca rolled her eyes then nodded, allowing me to drag her in the direction of the stairs that lead to the floor below.
“Max! Those guys just got up.” I heard her hiss behind me. “I think they’re following us.”
I felt uneasy, wondering what Rowan was doing right now. I shook away the thoughts as we hit a wall of heat and sound. The dance floor was pitch black apart from the glow of the bar and the occasional flash of disco lights. It was already packed with bodies; all writhing and bumping against one another. The bass was so loud I could feel my heart vibrating in time with the music.
I was thankful when we were greeted by a woman at the bar. “What can I get you guys?” She flashed us a friendly smile. I glanced at Becca who just shrugged.
“Uh, can we get two double Jack Daniels and Coke?” The woman nodded and hurried off to prepare our drinks.
“I don’t know if I like Jack Daniels,” Becca piped up and I sighed.
“Well tough, you’re having one now. I’ve drunk enough of your sugary cocktails to last me a lifetime. You owe me.” She shrugged and nodded, accepting her fate. Becca shimmied her hips in time with the music for a few moments before tapping me on the arm.
