“I cannot contain my passion for you any longer,” Robbyn grated, grasping the maid’s shoulders tightly. “My body aches for you, Mariun.”
Their eyes met and Mariun’s knees went weak. The knight clasped her to his chest.
“Let me take you this night.”
Raxx cringed. It was just as awful and contrived as he had imagined it would be. This was enough for Faye? Desperate to keep his mind off the incredibly erotic scene behind him, he flicked forward a few pages and kept reading.
Robbyn pressed Mariun against the cold stone wall. The maid gasped when his huge, erect member prodded at the sodden entrance to her honey pot.
“I love you, Mariun,” Robbyn growled.
“And I, you,” she whimpered.
Robbyn forcefully thrust inside her and Mariun’s eyes rolled to the back of her head.
Alright, he’d admitthatbit wasn’t so bad. A soft moan sent shivers down his spine and Raxx’s brows knitted. Keeping his eyes averted, he headed toward the window. The shadow demon quietly put the book down on the sill and, with a grimace of effort, disembodied and threw himself out into the night.
His wings shot open and Raxx glided to the ground, landing on his knee in the snow outside the inn. He stood and shook himself off. He couldn’t stand it any longer. Raxx ran a hand over a horn and stalked through the shadows.
A horse snorted and stamped its hooves as he turned off into a dark barn. Raxx knew he shouldn’t leave the princess unattended – whilst she had her hand down her knickers, she wasn’t likely to be going anywhere, but as soon as she was finished there would be nothing stopping her from slinking away without him.
Raxx couldn’t bring himself to care. He sat down heavily on a pile of small, square hay bales and rested his head in his hands. He was tired and needed a moment to clear his thoughts. He lay back and, though the dry hay was rough and made his skin itch, he closed his eyes.

A short while later, Raxx roused. The sun had risen and bright spears of light shone through the cracks in the wooden barn. The shadow demon rubbed his eyes and crept out from the building. A short distance away, the innkeeper was using a rusted old hand pump to fill some pales with water. It squealed loudly with every press of the handle.
Raxx faded into the shadows of the treeline and skirted around the man. He wasn’t in the mood for conversation this morning. He arrived at the entrance of the inn and pushed open the door. The reception area was empty, but there was the faint clinking of cutlery and murmurs of voices coming from the bar where he and Faye had sat the evening before.
Raxx hurried up the stairs before anyone saw him, coming to a stop outside the princess’s room. He raised his fist and knocked.
“Coming,” Faye called out from inside.
Raxx’s mind was immediately catapulted back to the scene in the bedroom from the night before.
I bet. You were definitely on your way the last time I saw you.He shook his head to dispel his inner monologue and schooled his face into a serious expression, just in time as the faerie threw open the door.
Chapter Four
“Hi,” Faye greeted her new travelling companion brightly. The demon stood outside her door, with a calm, indecipherable expression as usual. “Come in.”
Raxx hesitated a moment before obediently stepping through the doorway. Faye closed it behind him and began hunting around the room. Her book – a favourite of hers – seemed to have mysteriously disappeared. She lifted her bed sheets for the thousandth time and knelt to look under the bed.
“Lost something?” Raxx asked.
“Yeah, I was reading a book last night and I thought I’d put it down here on the floor, but I can’t find it,” Faye muttered. She coughed, accidentally inhaling some of the dust from beneath the bed. “I could have sworn--”
Raxx cleared his throat. When Faye looked up, he was standing over her with her book in his hand. He held it out to her, not meeting her eye.
“Oh, thanks. Where did you find it?” Faye beamed.
“It was on the windowsill over there.”
Faye looked over the book in her hands, frowning and shaking her head. “That’s weird,” she muttered. She got back to her feet and stuffed the book into her satchel.
“Determination of Desire?” Raxx’s face was as serious and expressionless as ever, yet Faye caught a slight inflection of humour in his tone.
Faye rolled her eyes, turning to face the shadow demon with her hands on her hips. “What’s wrong with that?”
