“I see.”

“Don’t be surprised if you find representatives from the German Embassy calling you in the morning. Refer them to the State Department. And dear God, don’t tell them anything I’ve told you here.”

“Yes, sir.”

“And, Agent?”

“Yes, sir?”

“Get some sleep. Hand off the scene to the people under you. You’ll have a long day tomorrow, so there’s no reason to burn yourself out tonight.”

And with that, the call disconnected.

“Hey, partner,” Agent Benjamin Harper said as he approached her. He was dressed in the usual FBI coat and cap, his shield on one hip and holster on the other. “Who was that?”

“Director Steele.”

“Good old Steelwork, himself? Look at you, moving up in the world.”

“And I keep dragging your ass along with me. What do you have for me?”

“We found three sniper rifles.”

“Huh?” Sarah’s mind was trying to catch up. “The glass exploded inward, not outward?”

“You are correct. The forensic tech removed one .300 caliber slug from one victim. Their wound pattern differed from the others, which is what caused it to stand out.”

“Take me.”

Benjamin led Sarah through the maze until they were at the first one. She looked down at the gun, still perched on the edge. The suite in question was clearly visible. They then visited the second and third ones.

“These are definitely sniper nests,” Sarah said, mostly to herself.

“That was my initial assessment,” Harper agreed.

“Were the snipers backup? And if so, whose side were they on?” Sarah walked around the area, taking it in. “I want to get all surveillance footage of these areas, including the hallways outside. I’m hoping a camera caught something.”

“Yes, sir,” Harper said. “Anything else?”

“Yeah, tell Agents Callahan and McCoy they will be left here to close shop. They can come in late tomorrow and file their reports. The rest of us will have a busy day tomorrow, so we might as well get some sleep. And before you argue, that came from the director. He warned me this will turn into a political shit show in the morning.”

Harper left her in the sniper’s nest. Sarah motioned for one of the FBI techs who was standing by. The agent came over and quickly started dismantling and tagging the evidence.

What am I missing?

Chapter Seven

Ethan

Ethan got a few hours of sleep. He lay curled next to Blayne, his arm wrapped around him. Despite losing a lot of blood, he’d still woke up with a raging hard-on. His was the type of hard-on that shot up his stomach instead of straight out, ready to poke someone in the eye. He’d seen enough porn in his life to know that dicks came in all sizes, shapes and colors. His was slightly above average. Blayne was not exactly average. The first time Ethan had seen Blayne’s dick, he thought,Where the hell is that supposed to go?ran through his head. He was afraid it would feel like he was being impaled by an actual eggplant or he would get lockjaw, because he wasn’t sure his mouth opened that wide. “No wonder Arnold jumped to attention and ran over here last night.”

“Someone’s happy to be awake this morning?” a groggy voice said from in front of him.

“Sorry… It has a mind of its own,” Ethan joked.

“Uh-huh,” Blayne said as he rolled over to face Ethan. Ethan reached out, grabbed the back of Blayne’s head and drew him in for a kiss. He wasn’t surprised to find said eggplant poking him in the stomach. “I’m apparently not the only one.”

“I wonder if a lot of babies get made because of morning wood?”
