The most interesting thing about Taylor, if one must choosesomething, is her accent. It’s an unusual one, much less polished than the typical Southern lady or gentleman who enters through my esteemed doors.

Yes…I’ve been watching Taylor closely, as I’m utterly bored. With the members away on their annual retreat, there’s precious little to occupy me.

I have been thinking for decades now that they ought to hold the retreat here, like they do the Initiation, instead of at the Mansion. Certainly the Mansion cannot possibly rival my own surroundings, steeped as they are in grandeur and millions of dollarsof artwork (not to mention the crème de la crème of paintings in Graham’s private chambers).

I do hope our standards are not beginning to slip. I must admit that I’m a bit mystified as to why Taylor was hired in the first place, when she didn’t even pass the geomancy test. I observed the ensuing procedure, and the figures generated by her footprint bore little resemblance to the shield that was ultimately filed in the Knox’s Book of Outsiders.

Someone must want her here.

The Knox Society Handbook of Practice and Procedures

v. 1817.1030(d)(2)(ii)(C)

Screening of Applicants for Hire Using Geomancy

Purpose. The purpose of this section is to provide a process by which Applicants under consideration for employment at the Knox are properly evaluated using geomantic divination.

Scope and Application. This section applies to all Applicants entering the Knox’s premises for scheduled interviews as defined by paragraph (b) of the section 29.1.

Applicants shall enter the premises using the back entrance.

Using a continuous forward motion, Applicants shall step onto a visibly clean empty 3x4 foot wooden box.[*1]

Any debris produced in the box from said action shall be discreetly procured and subsequently mixed with soil obtained from the earth in the basement adjacent to the Bowels scroll.

The resulting amalgamation shall provide the physical basis for the Geomancer to perform a divination reading regarding the Applicants’ employment feasibility. Such readings shall be done in a quiet location and the Geomancer shall be in a state of deep relaxation and meditation.[*2]

For each Applicant, the Geomancer will create sixteen rows of uncounted markings from right to left in the soil mixture, while concentrating on the posed question to the oracle: “Is this the right Applicant, over the other Applicants, to fulfill the position?”[*3]

The sixteen rows shall be divided in groups of four, and rows with even number of markings will be assigned one dot, whereas rows with odd number of markings will be assigned two dots. The first four figures of the geomantic shield, the Mother figures, shall thereby be generated.

The Geomancer will then use the four Mother figures to cast the rest of the shield.
