Taylor is not essential, nor trusted.
But whoistrusted? Is Jerry? What if he fabricated the story behind Vivian’s fall? And why does he want to leave the Knox now? What is going on that the others, like Eduardo, can’t see? Is someone else living in the servants’ quarters with them, like the phantom woman in the window?
Taylor opens her laptop on her counter, thinking. She feels like she’s missing something. She’s looked up Vivian online plenty of times, but never her fellow employees, so she decides to do just that. But she realizes, almost embarrassingly, she doesn’t know their last names. Something tugs at her memory. Liam calling Jerry “O’Doyle,” Eduardo correcting him to “Doyle.”
She types “Jerry Doyle” into her browser. She filters her search to Boston, to Beacon Hill, but she finds barely anything, not even across social media platforms. But what about Tara, his sister? The aspiring nurse?
Bingo: Tara Doyle is on Facebook. And, although she only has two public photos listed, one of a stethoscope and another of Acorn Street—Boston’s famous cobblestone street—when Taylor looks through the comments on the former, she gets a lead.
I have the same stethoscope, but in pink!Molly Frank writes.
And then, a couple of comments down, Molly remarks:U should join the Boston Student Nurse group, if u don’t already belong.
Taylor promptly requests to join that private group, checking the boxes to indicate thatYes, I’m currently a nursing student, Yes, I will abide by the rules, and Yes, I agree to not violate any patient’s confidentiality. An administrator happens to be online, because Taylor’s request is instantly approved.
She searches through the group’s members to find Tara Doyle, who apparently joined one month ago. Taylor prepares to take a deep dive into Tara Doyle’s group posts and activity, but she doesn’t have to go very far.
Facebook Boston Student Nurse Group
Molly Frank:Hi Tara! Glad to see you took my advice! Welcome to the Group! What do you need help with?
Tara Doyle:I’m still in nursing school (I guess we all are), but Patient V fell down the stairs and has a subdural hematoma/traumatic brain injury. She was discharged from the hospital about two months ago and is now at a longer term care place. I’m doing my clinical rotation here, so she is my patient.
Molly Frank:Poor Patient V! What’s your question?
Sharon Pinkton:Tara Doyle, which LTC?
Tara Doyle:Molly Frank, my question is about her medical management. V is recovering but she does sometimes get agitated. We started her on Amantadine for her traumatic brain injury and Xanax for her agitation.
Molly Frank:Amantadine? I thought that’s used to treat Parkinson’s tremors.
Sharon Pinkton:I thought Amantadine is an anti-viral?
Tara Doyle:It’s both! But they also use it to help with cognition in traumatic brain injuries. It helps with neuroprotection, I guess. That’s what the house doctor said.
Molly Frank:Interesting. I just looked it up. It seems like it’s used more for moderate to severe cases?? Is that Patient V? Also, you should be careful with the use of benzodiazepines like Xanax. Is V on an anti-seizure medication?
Sharon Pinkton:House doctor?
Tara Doyle:Sorry. I mean the doctor.
Sharon Pinkton:Which LTC?
Tara Doyle:Sharon Pinkton, what does LTC mean?
Sharon Pinkton:You really don’t know?Long-term care facility. Which one? I’m also working at one right now, in Brookline. I’m a second year nursing student at the IHP. What about you?
Tara Doyle:Molly Frank, V is not a bad case. I don’t know why they prescribed Amantadine…. The doctor did, not me! She is on Keppra for seizure prevention. Also why do we need to be careful with Xanax? This is my question, btw. What can we use in addition to the Xanax when she gets agitated and impulsive?
Sharon Pinkton:Which LTC?
Molly Frank:They don’t like to use benzodiazepines like Xanax in the long run. They can cause confusion. Also they can be addictive?Esp in elderly (I don’t know if V is?)
Sharon Pinkton:Which LTC?
Tara Doyle:Molly Frank, ah, okay, good to know. So what do you suggest?
Molly Frank:Zyprexa, Seroquel, Trazodone? What is she on for pain management?
