“Any press?”

“Not so far. Roberta and the PR people booked up all the charters in the area they could find. Paid them to fly around in circles for a few hours to give us a head start.”

Unlike the day we arrived, the staff haven’t assembled to see us off. No doubt they’re inside circling the wagons. The kindest thing I can do is get out of their hair.

I step up into the plane first, then give Vin a hand up. It’s only when I turn that I realize someone is already inside.

And he doesn’t look happy to be there.

“Jack?”

His expression isn’t a smile, more a grimace. That’s the best he can manage.

“Guess we’re traveling together,” he says.

“What? Why?”

Jack smooths his hands over his thighs before he speaks, and when he looks up at me again, his eyes are dark like a thundercloud.

“Effective this morning, I’m no longer employed at the Wild Eagle Lodge.”
