He groaned and sucked me harder. Seeing them both between my legs was nearly too much to handle. Ava eagerly complimented him, her breasts heavy on my leg as Caspian’s wet mouth moved up and down. Thank fuck he’d given me a human mouth to work in and out of.

He popped off, gripping me in his hand as he began kissing her desperately. I imagined she tasted me on his tongue and shuddered in delight.

Caspian sunk his mouth back down on me while he looked at her, reaching up to cradle her face as I started to come. I tugged on him, trying to pull him off. He just slid me back further as I finished down his tight throat, groaning and scratching his head.

Three months after getting back, we had an easy routine. During the day, I stayed with Ava. Of course, part of that was a necessity but even if it weren’t I’d still choose that delicious cage.

Our closeness was beyond normality. Which didn’t mean we got along the best. Actually, I’d wager it was the opposite. We griped, picked, teased, and angered one another incessantly because one thing we both knew for sure is we were never getting rid of the other one. We would always have each other, even at our ugliest. I liked that I could bring out a little viciousness in Ava.

At night I went off on my own because the days wore me out. All the talking and people andsociety. I knew all about it from Ava’s own memories but it was nothing I was used to or even enjoyed. I was used to the company of darkness and ghosts.

Ava knew where I went at night. Nowhere. I slid into the walls and relaxed for hours, finally alone.

Over the past month though, I’d begun to spend time slinking the halls—peering in rooms, exploring the house all on my own.

It was dusk, nearly time for me to go off on my own. Ava was having dinner with the family but I wanted a moment to talk to her alone.

“My beautiful queen,” I purred to Ava. She bit her lip and looked around at the others who couldn’t hear me. “You haven’t changed your mind to be my protege, have you? A promise is a promise.”

“I haven’t,” she whispered. Caspian looked over, immediately noticing her talking to herself, even if just a couple mumbled words. That one wasalwayswatching.

“Good. There’s something I want though.” Ava got up from the table, excusing herself before going to her room.

“You want something, Makwa?” She asked, sounding hopeful. Had I really been so dour since coming here that she was excited that I wanted something?

“I’m not sure you’ll approve…” I figured she’d hate this but I didn’t plan on allowing her out of it.

“What?” She asked apprehensively, crossing her room to look out her window at the last remnants of the sun in the sky.

“I want to join the family business,” I said. I pulled out from her as soon as the sky was dark. My bare feet pressed into the carpet in front of me and I slid my fingers across Ava’s jaw and into her hair.

“You want to work with my mom and aunt?” She asked, looking up at me, her eyes trailing over my features as if she forgot them each time. Honestly, I could care less about appearing like a man but… Ava looked at me a certain way when I did.

Her eyes traced my broad shoulders and prominent collar bones. Her gaze snagged on my thighs showing from under my poncho. Of course, when she did that I flipped up my clothing to show her something much more interesting than thighs. Her eyes widened and I laughed, leaning over her. I pressed my mouth to hers and gripped her hair tightly.

“Tell me I can’t,” I said against her lips. I darted my tongue out to touch hers. Her hands came up to grip my biceps, trying to stabilize herself as I pressed in too close.

“I think it’s a good idea,” she said.

“Hmm, well that's no fun,” I said in disappointment. I was looking forward to the fight.

“You know it would be you as well,” I said. “I can’t do it alone. I wouldn’t want to and this would be perfect for me to teach you.” My tongue darted into her mouth again as my hair began to rise up around me, floating preternaturally. Her tongue followed mine, flicking out to tease mine. Her eyes lit with humor.

“I got that, Makwa. I’m ready. I don’t want to be caught unaware and incapable again.”

“Expecting trouble?” I asked, walking her back until we hit the bed. She fell on it and I climbed on top of her. She groaned against me as my tentacles slowly slid up the bed, wrapping around her wrists and ankles.

“Shouldn’t I always expect trouble? I think our kind is cursed.”

“It’s not that we’re cursed. My issue was being… different,” I said tactfully.

“Oh, you mean eating souls and trying to lord over people?”

“I would have made an excellent ruler. Vicious, just like the gods.”

“I don’t have that issue.”
