I turned for his inspection. "Think I'll fit in?"

"You need a hat and I have no clue what's up with your boots, but sure. It's close enough." Then he tilted his head. "We need to leave in about ten minutes."

"You already fed the cows?" I asked.

"I go out early on Sundays. Started at four-thirty today, and the whole house was asleep." But he stepped back, right into the middle of the doorway.

My eyes ran across his body, taking in this new version of my cowboy. His jeans were dark blue, his shirt was light green, and his boots were clean. The belt buckle he always wore was actually a nice touch. Clearing my throat, I pulled my eyes away.

"You clean up nice," I said, trying to keep it from sounding too personal.

Then I grabbed my keys and phone and gestured for him to lead on. When I climbed into the passenger seat of his truck, I cracked my knees on the dash. Luke laughed while I figured out how to move it back.

"Who the hell?" I asked.

"Faith," he explained. "Pretty much the only person who rides shotgun with me."

"Yeah, she and I are going to have to talk about chair settings," I teased. "She's gonna be there, right?"

"Yep," Luke said. "Probably won't get to introduce you, though. Meredith prefers not to see me."

"That's cool," I told him. "I might wave, though." Then I realized another problem. "Um, Luke?"

"Yeah?" His eyes never left the road.

"So, I know that people know I'm from Southwind. You going to be offended if I introduce myself as a doctor?"

His lips curled. "Thought you hated that."

"I think it's pompous and egotistical. I also know that there's a deference that comes with the title that might make things a little less awkward today."

"Doctor Cy Marshall?" he asked, glancing over.

"Sure," I agreed, then had to fight a grin. "Wait, are you saying that you don't like my first name?"

He laughed. "I'll just say that I once knew a guy named Courtney. We called him C.J."

"It's not just a girls’ name," I told him. "Granted, I think my mother was high when she had me, so there's that. I'm just glad I wasn't a girl. She was going to name me Twinkle."

"Oh," Luke groaned. "That's bad."

"Tell me about it."

Then we pulled into a large gravel parking lot. At the back was a rather boring metal building. The only way I knew it was a church was the sign by the side of the road. "Cats Peak Baptist Church." Very original, but it did get the point across.

"This the only church in town?" I asked.

Luke nodded. "Yep. There's a Catholic one over in Bonham, and a few of the neighboring towns have others. Mostly Baptists around here, though." He found a spot and parked. "You ready for this, Cy?"

"As I'll ever be."

I grabbed my Bible and jumped out. Luke leaned back to pull his from the back seat, then met me at the back of his truck. Side by side - but not too close - we headed toward the church. We also weren't the only ones. A squeal of delight proved that we'd been spotted.

"Daddy!" Faith called, running across the gravel parking lot. "Hey, Cy!"

"Hey, kiddo," I greeted her. "You look nice."

"I didn't know you went to church," she said.
