“Okay. Hey, are those pants getting a bit tight? I think maybe you’re putting on weight.”

She smacked his shoulder, hard. “I want to feel bad about my dad, not feel bad in general.”

“Right. Got it.” He was quiet for a moment, then said, “Want me to go find Hockley?”

“In a minute,” she said. “For now, though, can you—can you just sit over there and be quiet, and let me catch up to all the ways my life just fell apart?”

“You want me to go back to my office? I can give you some space.”

“No. I want you to stay. But I need you to shut up, okay?”

He didn’t answer, just went over and sat in the chair and let her regroup. She was Kay. She was tough. She’d get past this and come out swinging. And if she decided her next step involved flames, Jericho would help her pour the gasoline.
