“Why are youpicking at this?”
“Becausesomething else is going on. You got railroaded and it’s not fucking fair!Someone should pay for that.”
“Goddammit, Daisy,it’s none of your business.”
I let out aquiet hiss of pain. That went directly to my heart, and I swallowed back mytears as I nodded. “Yep. Okay, got it.”
“Fuck,” he bitout. “I didn’t mean… look, I’m sorry that came out so harsh. I just mean—”
“I know what youmeant, Huck, and it’s fine. I had a feeling you’d be mad, and I was right. Ishould have never brought it up. Just forget I said anything.” I took a deepbreath. “I think we’re rushing things a little and maybe we should figure outwhat we both want, because I’ll tell you one thing for sure, I’m not going totolerate someone speaking to me like that.” I jabbed my tongs at him. “Ever.”
“Dais—”
“You can gonow,” I said, pointing to the door.
He sighed, pushing away from the island, and walking out the door. I locked up behind him, then grabbed a donut, and called Teagan.
Huck
IWALKED BACK into my sister’s condoroyally pissed at myself for snapping at Daisy but still equally pissed at her.I didn’t like that I’d gone off on her, but on the flipside of that, what thefuck right did she have digging into my past like that? I didn’t ask for herhelp and I sure as hell didn’t ask for her dad’s.
Louisa steppedout of the kitchen, a cup of coffee in her hand, and stalled. “Hey, I thoughtyou were hanging with Daisy today.”
“Well, I justfucked that up, sissy.” I dragged my hands down my face. “Not sure if I canwalk it back, either.”
She groaned.“What did you do?”
I filled her inon our conversation and Louisa let out a quiet hum of conspiratorial agreement.
“Why are youmaking that noise?” I demanded.
“What if Daisy’sright?”
“What the fuck?”I threw my hands in the air. “You can’t actually think Marc would have beenpaid off by someone to fuck me up like that, LouLou? Who would have wanted todo that?”
“Did you askher?”
“No, I kind ofblew up before I had a chance to do that,” I admitted.
She sighed.“Well, it’s not outside the realm of possibility, is it? And it’s not likeanyone else thought of it or was willing to go above and beyond to look intoit, were they?” she pointed out before patting me on the shoulder. “You’reright. You fucked up, big time. And you were an asshole on top of it.”
“Thanks for thepep talk,” I grumbled.
“Lucky for you,Daisy’s surrounded by alpha holes, and she kind of loves all of them to afault. I have a feeling that if you apologize and give her a good grovel, and Imean, crawling on your knees to her doorstep, hat in hand level groveling, little brother, she’ll probably forgive you.” She shrugged. “Maybe.”
I frowned. “Whatthe fuck’s an alpha hole?”
“Alpha male, asshole. Her brother, Cash, for example.”
“Jesus, I’mnothing like Cash Carver.”
She raised aneyebrow. “Did you or did you not raise your voice at her, when all she did wassome research on your behalf with only your best interests at heart?”
“Yes,” Imumbled.
She cupped herear. “I’m sorry, I couldn’t hear that.”
“Yeah,” I said alittle louder as I glared at her.
