“It was nevergoing to happen.”
“I know thatnow.”I looked up at him. “But he was crazy, and he’d already hurt you and your dad,so in the moment, I thought he might actually make it happen.”
“Yeah, baby, hewas certifiable.” He stroked my hip. “But he’s dead and no one’ll ever getclose enough to even breathe on you again, so you’ve got nothing to worryabout.”
“I’m sorry Ididn’t tell you I was leaving.”
“Youdidtell me.”
“I should havewaited for you to meet us.”
“Stop,” herasped. “None of this is your fault.”
“But itis,”I argued. “I made the rookie mistake of thinking no one could touch me here inMontana. I got cocky.”
Huck chuckled, rolling me so he was hovering. “Baby the last thing anyone would ever think youare is cocky. And you had no way of knowing about Cyrus. I didn’t know abouthim. Your dad only found out a few hours before he grabbed you, so none of thisis on you. It’s on Cyrus, may he burn in hell.”
“Well, I’m nevergoing anywhere without you in the future.”
“No, we’re notplaying that game, because you are not going to let fear win.”
I wrinkled mynose. “It has already won.”
“Then we’ll getyou back to a place where you’re no longer afraid.”
I tugged on hisbeard. “I’ll be brave when you’re with me twenty-four-seven.”
He smiled. “I’mhappy to be with you twenty-four-sevenuntilyou feel brave enough to bealone.”
I let out aquiet huff. “It’s never going to happen.”
“Luckily, youdon’t need to find out for a while.”
I stroked hisface. “Thank you for rescuing me.”
“Likewise.”
I cocked myhead. “What?”
“Before you, Ithought my hockey career was over, I had no crew to have my back, and neverthought I’d ever meet a woman half as amazing as you, let alone, sucker herinto falling for me.” He gripped my chin. “Everything about my life has changedfor the better since I met you. So, I’d say we rescued each other.”
“Tie game?”
“Hockey neverends in a tie.”
“I’m not talkingabout hockey,” I said, pulling his head down for a kiss.
Our game oftonsil hockey got heated, and I honestly wasn’t sure if it ended in a tie, butit did end with us naked, which was a win in my book.
“Can we eat junkfood and watch bad movies all night or do you still have club stuff?” I askedonce we came up for air.
“Hell, yeah, we caneat junk food and watch bad movies.”
“Awesome. Whatare the odds this establishment has room-service?”
“Slim to none,”he said. “But Razor said he’d make a run if we wanted anything. We just need totext him.”
“I adore thatman,” I said, sitting up. “I should probably get a toothbrush.”
