“I think so,” Ireplied, running my hands over Phin’s chest, making sure he was fully intact.“How about you?”
“I feel a littleseasick, but I’m fine otherwise,” he whispered. “Forget about me, though, love. You made the jump.”
“I did!” Iexclaimed. “I got both of us here in one piece.”
“I knew youwould. I’m so proud of you,” he said, kissing my forehead, before helping meup.
“Okay, now thatwe’re here, it’s time for part two of the plan,” I said.
“Stay closebehind me. If Trask’s guards start shooting, I don’t want you catching abullet. You’re still coming into your powers, and I can heal much faster thanyou can.” He squeezed my hand. “If things get too hairy, I want you to jumpaway from here. A few miles will do, but do not waste time or energy trying totake me with you.”
“I need to savemy energy to get us into the panic room.”
Phin narrowedhis eyes. “Getting to your father isn’t as important as your safety.”
“Then it’s notas important as yours either,” I argued.
“I can handlemyself, but Icannothandle anything happening to you. Do youunderstand?”
I nodded.
“Say the words,Lennox.”
“If we’re indanger, I’ll jump to safety.”
“And…”
“I won’t try tosave you.”
“Good. Now, leadthe way, but stay saf—”
“Safely behindyou,” I said, mimicking his growly bear tone.
“Let’s go.”

Lennox led us around theperimeter of the property until we were about twenty-five yards away from thehouse. From what I could make out, there were two armed guards posted at thefront and two out back. I could only assume there were as many guards inside aswell.
“Okay. You waitright here, and I’ll speed up to the guards, and cause a distraction. Thatshould cause enough alarm to drive Trask to the safe room, then I’ll speed backhere, and you can jump us inside with him.”
She tapped hertemple. “Let me know if you get into any kind of trouble.”
“I will,” Ipromised, before speeding away.
I will neverget used to that.
Yes, youwill.
I circled theperimeter of the house, tapping each guard on the shoulder as I whizzed by.After only a few passes, the guards were sufficiently freaked out and the alarmwas sounded. Sirens blared, and halogen lights flooded the property, my cue torejoin Lennox, but when I got back to our spot, she was gone.
I called out toher telepathically but got no response.
