“Feel better?”he asked.

He grinned.“Good. Come on, I’ll show you where everything is.”

I got Lennox settled, then gaveher a tour of the castle, trying to avoid the inevitable. Once we reached thelibrary, I stopped her. “There’s something I need to tell you.”

She bit her lip.“What is it?”

“I told you thatyour father and his men got away.”

Lennox nodded.

“In truth, allbut one of them escaped, and we have him in our custody.”

“Who? Where is he?”

“He said hisname is Stuart Cavanaugh and Alasdair’s had him locked up in our security hold, but right now he’s in the library.”

“I want to speakwith him,” Lennox said.

“Alasdair’s hadno problem compelling him to tell the truth, and I don’t think that’s a goodidea that you—”

“I want to speakwith Stuart right now. Alone, please.” she insisted. “You can stand rightoutside if it’ll make you feel better and I’ll yell if I need you, but I haveto do this by myself.”

I frowned, notliking the idea of her being alone with this asshole one bit.

“There’s onething you need to know before going in there,” I said. “Your father’s planwasn’t to fire on the castle, or harm anyone inside.”

“What do youmean? I thought me and the other protesters were supposed to be a distraction.”

I shook my head.“No, love. You and the protesters were the target. Your father’s men werecarrying the same rifles used by Alasdair’s team. In fact, Stuart told us thatthey were working with an inside man who helped them enter the castle groundand supplied them with ammunition from the castle’s armory. Your father wasgoing to claim that our security team mowed down a group of unarmed protestorsduring an ambush he himself barely escaped from.”

The colordrained from Lennox’s face. “He was going to kill us all?”

“I’m afraid so,”I replied, softly.

“Where are theother protesters?”

“Alasdairdetained them before turning them over to the Scottish authorities. They’lllikely be questioned and deported, but they’ll be okay as long as they hadnothing to do with your father’s plan.”

I want tospeak with Stuart alone. Please, Phin. I’ll let you know if I need you.

I sighed, givingher a reluctant nod, then led everyone else out of the room, closing the doors, but standing against them just in case.

“I have to admit, you had mefooled,” I said as I approached Stuart. “I honestly thought you were one of thegood guys.

He didn’t pose athreat to me, as his wrists and ankles were bound to a large wooden chair, butI kept my distance, nonetheless.

“Lennox?” hegasped, shock written all over his face.
