I gasped. “Butyou carried me here?”

“Aye,” hereplied.

“What did youuse to knock me out? Ketamine? PHG? How long was I unconscious?”

“PHG? What’sthat?”

“The date rapedrug?”

“I believe whatyou’re looking for there is GHB,” Phin said.

“I’m not lookingfor any kind of drugs, or any type of kinky activities you might have in mind.I may look sweet, but I’ll have you know, I’m a fighter… and… and a biter.”

“Duly noted,” hesaid. “I’ll be sure to keep my kinky hands to myself.”

I narrowed myeyes with a huff. “So, what did you slip me?”

“Nothing.” Hesighed. “I didn’t knock you out or give you any kind of drugs. I would never dothat.”

“Then how didyou—”

“A sleep suggestion,”he answered. “Completely harmless, I assure you. In fact, it didn’t even workthat well on you. I’m not sure why. But I’d planned to have the place a littlemore set up by the time you woke.”

I pointed to theaxe, stuck in a large stump by the fireplace. “Set up for what? My rape, murder, and dismemberment?”

“What?” Hescoffed. “No, Lennox.”

Every time hesaid my name, I felt like I lost a little breath and felt like I was going topass out.

“I told you.I’ve brought you to this cabin to keep you safe.”

“Why?” I threwmy hands in the air in frustration. “Why would you care at all about me?”

“For one, because you warned us against your father’s attack.”

“And the otherreason is…?”

He studied mefor a few tense seconds before letting out a long sigh. “A discussion foranother day.”

“Listen to mevery carefully,” I said as forcefully as I could. “I want you to take me to myfather right now.”

“I can’t dothat, and even if I could, I wouldn’t,” he said.

“Why can’t you?”

“Because wedon’t know where he is.”

I frowned. “We?”

“Aye. Alasdairis our family’s head of security. His team captured one of your father’s men,but he and the rest got away.”

“Are you tellingme my father left us here?”

Phin nodded. “Hehad a helicopter nearby, which flew him and his men north, toward the harbor. He’s likely sailing the North Sea in an undocumented vessel. There are plentyof them for hire down at the harbor.”

“What about thegroup of protesters I was with?”

“We have them.They’re safe.”
