“I should getback to the others,” I said, trying to put as much distance between us aspossible.
“I’d rather youdidn’t, Lennox.”
I swallowedconvulsively. “I told them I had to pee. My father will worry if I’m not at mypost.”
“Your fatherdoesn’t care about you, but I think you already know that.”
I bit backtears. “That’s not true.”
“Aye, love, itis.”
I shook my head.
He steppedforward. “How many of your father’s cronies are coming for my people?”
“I don’t know,”I rasped, stepping back.
“How many,Lennox?” He stepped toward me again.
“I don’t know.”I swallowed again. “There’s a dozen of us at the gate. But I think he has ateam of soldiers waiting nearby.”
“How did theyget past our security?”
“I honestlydon’t know, but there were men traveling with us that I don’t know.”
“Soldiers?”
“I think so.Now, I have to go.”
Phin held outhis hand. “Please, give me your cell phone.”
“What? Why?”
“Because yourfather could be tracking you, or you could be a spy.”
“I’m not a spyand I don’t have my phone with me. Mr. Miller collected all our phones beforeour plane landed. He said it was part of his security protocol.”
He uncrossed hisarms and stepped forward. I turned to run, but I was suddenly unable to move. Iopened my mouth to scream but was immediately silenced.
I won’t hurtyou, Lennox.
What are you doing?

Phineas
Sleep.
Lennox collapsedat my command, but I caught her as she did, lifting her gently into my arms andholding her close.
Shite.
My mate was thedaughter of the head of the fucking Hand of the Cross. How the hell is thishappening? How can this possibly be the will of the Fates?
I had to getLennox as far away from her father and his army of crusaders as possible. She’dbe asleep for at least five or six hours, giving me more than enough time tocover the ground I needed. I held her close to me as I ran. Breathing with her,as our heartbeats synchronized. Feeling a connection to her like nothing elseI’d ever felt before.
“What’shappening?” Lennox groaned as she began to wriggle in my arms.
