“I’d love to see it some time.”

“I’d love to show it to you,” I admitted.

“Jaxon Quinn, honey, as I live and breathe!” an older woman called out.

Jaxon turned toward her and she rushed over, wrapping her arms around his waist.

He hugged her back and chuckled. “Ms. Peggy, how are you?”

“Still breathing.”

“You look exactly the same.”

“Charmer.” She smacked his chest. “Who’s your friend?”

“Harmony, this is Peggy. She and her husband have run the café since I was...well, before I was.”

I smiled and shook her hand. “It’s nice to meet you.”

“You too, honey. Why do you look familiar?”

My heart raced. “Um...”

“I’ll fill you in later, if that’s okay,” Jaxon said to Peggy. “But it’d be great if you didn’t see us.”

Peggy smiled. “My lips are sealed. Now, you kids sit anywhere. I’ll bring you a couple of menus.”

Jaxon guided us to a booth away from the windows and we sat facing each other.

“Why did you go into the FBI?” I asked.

“Not sure there was a specific reason. Just kind of fell into it. My brother was first, then I met my crew in the academy and we all went for it together.”

“Your crew?”

“My brother, Matt, runs a team of six, including Me, Brock, and Dallas. You’ll probably meet them in the coming days. They’re working behind the scenes to get your situation worked out.”

“So, it’s kind of a family thing?”

Jaxon chuckled. “Well, no. There are six of us”

“Wait, really?”

He nodded.

“Are you religious?” I asked.

Jaxon let out a snort. “Not even close.”

Peggy dropped a couple of menus off, after pouring Jaxon a cup of coffee. I ordered a coke and she left us to look over the food options.

“So, not religious...” I prompted.

“Sonot religious,” he confirmed with a grin. “Josh is married with kids, he’s a CPA, Matt and I are FBI, Luke’s still figuring out what he wants to do, but working construction in the meantime, then Carter and Aidan are both part of an MC. Aidan’s a vet, Carter’s a mechanic.”

“MC?”

“Motorcycle club.”
