“Speaking of which, her laptop is missing. Please tell me you have it.”

“Why do you want toknow? Is there something on there that can incriminate her? Is that what you’re here looking for?”

“Are you kidding me right now?” I asked, wanting to punch him. “There were just two guys in her apartment talking about the murder and looking for something. If what they’re looking for is on her computer, I want to make sure someone else didn’t come through the door the cops broke and steal it.”

He pulled a notepad and pencil from his pocket and said, “Start from the beginning and tell me everything.”

My phone was still recording, but I wasn’t about to surrender it to him. I pushed the button to stop it and slid it into my pocket. Then I told him (almost) the full story.

“Jesus,” I rasped onceAddison was finished telling me everything that had happened with Dylan.“She’s kind of gotten the raw end of the deal, huh?”

Addison nodded, wiping tears from her cheeks. “Her whole life, Jake.”

I forced myself not to reach out and stroke her face. She was stunning, her light blue eyes bright as they glistened with tears. “We’re gonna figure this out.”

“I need her out of jail, Jake. She’s too soft to be in jail.”

“I’m gonna do whatever I can to help, Addison.I don’t have the power to get her out right now, but I’ll do what I can to find the evidence that leads to the truth.”

“Do you believe me?”

“Yeah. I believe you,” I said without hesitation.

She burst into tears and I couldn’t stop myself from wrapping my arms around her and pulling her close. “I feel like I’m running uphill with cement shoes on,” she whispered into my chest. “Who would frameher like this? I don’t understand.”

“We’re gonna figure it out, Addison. You’ve just got to be patient and trust me.”

“I’m not very good with patience,” she admitting looking up at me. “But I do trust you.”

I smiled. “It’s a start.”
