“What are you doing?” I ask.

“I’m hiding you. We don’t know what kind of people are in the waiting room. The number of times I’ve ended up in pictures and videos when I’m trying to be low key is frustrating.” He kisses the top of my head. “I don’t want you getting caught up in it. It’s my job as your alpha to protect you.”

As soon as the word alpha drops from his lips, more perfume curls around us.

He kisses me again as he says it, and I’m suddenly swept up in him. We can’t stop kissing, like we keep saying goodbye over and over again.

Kane pulls back, and he looks just as awestruck as me. But he snaps us both out of it before we fall back onto the bed.

“Besides, you’re basically helping me, too. If I’m going around smelling of omega, hopefully other omegas will see I’m taken.”

I laugh because I know it’s just noise. One, there’s no way my scent will hang around for that long. And two, Kane is an alpha that omegas will never stop thirsting over. It’s another reason I should stay away from him. I’m already about eighty-five percent sure I’m going to end up losing sleep over him as well as the lovely Timber Holtz.

“You have to promise to stay in touch. I want to get to know you.” Kane sighs as he kisses my neck again. I’m never going to forget this scent.

If I tell him ‘me too,’ how are things going to change? Could I ask Timber to take me to a game to see Kane, and get my horniness revved up to a million? If I’m breaking through my suppressants and perfuming around Kane like this already, how will I react to seeing them together?

“Will you promise me?” Kane asks, drawing close, holding my gaze. “Promise me, Ollie,” he says. “Tell me you’ll come back to me.”

I don’t have any defense against him. He looks so sincere that it shakes my heart. I feel like a different person with him. I’m not trapped in the box of freaking horniness because my pussy is the key, and he did a damn good job opening it.

I give him a brief nod because I’d deeply love to see him again, but paying off Luke’s hospital bills is more important.

So I’m already plotting a way to get out of the date.

According to Timber’s schedule, they’ll be away for most of the week before the date, so maybe I can make up an excuse as we get closer to it.

“If you break that promise, I’ll come and find you. I swear.” His voice is deep as he vowed something I didn’t realize I needed to hear.

He scoops me into another kiss just before we leave the room, pulling back to give me a smile that says ‘mine’.

Kane

I’m losing my mind. I’m definitely texting Ollie more than she’s texting me, and a phone call so I can hear her voice is out of the question. But I don’t understand why.

Her replies are sporadic, and I’m trying not to be too needy. I want to see her before we leave in a few days for our away games. When I offered to meet up, she was evasive, and I’m starting to get the hint.

She said she wouldn’t bolt on me. So, in a way, this is worse.

The fact that I’ve even gone back to the hospital just to see if I can find a single hint of maple syrup proves how bad I’m down for her.

It’s my fault, because there were fans who filmed us leaving a heat room together. The jacket hid Ollie’s face, but they got videos and pictures of me with my arm around her, and it went viral too quickly. People don’t watch me all the time, but she clearly said that she didn’t want any heat. So, I’m probably the worst person she could scent match with.

That’s the only reason I can think of why she keeps saying no every time I ask her if she wants to meet. But it doesn’t explain why I can’t call her.

We have three away games, and then we’re back with only a couple of days off until we play hard at home and away before our big date. And I can feel she’s getting ready to ditch me.

I just want to know if she feels the same desperate need that pounds in me at a single thought of her. My whole body rings with her scent, and my memory of her is like a fever dream. I can’t handle how much I want to be with her, and I have to keep telling myself it’s only because of the scent match and my alpha side demanding I find and bite her. That’s all. If I hadn’t scent matched with her, it would be like any other hook-up I’ve had.

A sick feeling rolls through my stomach as I think that, because it can’t be true. Ollie could never just be a hook-up.

I’ve snuck out of the main building to go behind the rink. There’s a little walled-off area with a bench that no one seems to know about.

Or Ithoughtno one knew about it. I wanted to call Ollie to see how she’d react, but this is equally interesting. Because lo and behold, who do I find?

Timber has squeezed his huge frame onto the bench against the wall. On his lap sits a large blue plastic box that looks tiny in his hands.

He stares at the box with a fierce expression and doesn’t even hear me approach.
