Not when the case was heating up. They knew the story about Brenda Wright and what led to Kenzie Kenwood’s suicide had been released by the media.
Senator Hubbard was running for President and was the projected winner by the media. Then, to make the cherry on top of a perfect sundae, Jeffery Blackwood gave his own interview about those events, and his own experience with Brenda Wright’s bullying, which was why he was pledging twenty million toward Hubbard’s opponent in the race.
“You good, Ice baby?” Rocky sat down next to her on the couch.
“Yeah. I think the lack of sleep is catching up to me,” Lana groaned as she leaned her head back onto the couch.
“Jayson still being distant with you?” Sunny asked from the kitchen.
“A little. At nighttime, when we are asleep, is the only time his guard is down and he reaches for me in his sleep.”
“Mommy, I can’t find my pink jammies,” Dani yelled from her bedroom doorway.
Lana stood up to go help her daughter find her pink pajamas. When she started to walk, she fell face forward, passing out.
“Lana!”
CHAPTER
SIXTY
Jayson took a swallow of his beer while he listened to Ryan talk. When his phone rang, he ignored it, not even looking at the caller ID.
He rolled his eyes when Ryan’s phone started ringing and he answered it. When he heard Ryan curse, he felt guilty for not checking his phone.
“Which hospital?” Ryan asked, throwing a couple of twenties onto the bar for their drinks.
“What’s wrong?” Jayson asked when Ryan hung up.
“Rocky called to let you know they had to call 9-1-1 for Lana. She stood up to go help Dani find her favorite pajamas and face planted into the coffee table when she passed out.”
“What hospital?”
Jayson got behind the wheel and took off before Ryan could close his door. When he arrived, he was frantic.
He’d been in his feelings about having been left out of what she’d planned where Ashley was concerned. Yet, he still found himself drawn to her every night when he fell asleep.
His heart understood why she did what she did, but his damn head hadn’t got the memo yet. He loved her with everything he had and then some.
He couldn’t lose her. He prayed she would be okay the entire drive and walk into the hospital.
“Can I help you?” the snooty nurse asked.
“I’m looking for my wife, Lana Pennington, or she could be listed as Lana Kenwood.”
“Room four. Only you can go back. She’s already got one damn guard dog in there,” the front desk nurse replied grumpily.
Jayson hurried though the secured door and down the hallway toward the area Lana was in. When he rushed into her room, she was asleep, and Rocky was pacing.
Jayson could see the dark circles under Lana’s eyes. One eye was already turning black and blue.
She had a split lip and a few cuts on her face and arms from what he could see. He moved to the opposite side of Lana’s bed and took her hand in his.
“You better get your shit straight, Kenwood. Or so help me God, when this case ends, you will lose her for good,” Rocky warned him darkly.
“You’re right,” Jayson agreed. “I’ve been in my feelings over you guys leaving me out of the plan and letting Ashley drug me. I understand why, but in my head, I’m still pissed off at everything.”
“Lana didn’t make that choice lightly. Even you have to admit you would have been on guard had we told you. She would have been unpredictable with the kids in the house.”
