“I’m okay, now. You and Dani are home where you belong, and you handled business. I want to know what the fuck Angelo was thinking when he came after my wife and daughter.”
So did Lana. She knew there was a hidden message in the way things went down. She just had to figure it the fuck out.
CHAPTER
THIRTY-EIGHT
Lana walked back into the living room several minutes later after she had put her duty vest up. Once she’d secured her weapon, she changed into a T-shirt that she wore when she wanted to relax and go into her thinking mode.
She walked over to the couch when Jayson nodded at the plate and beer he had in his hand, then at the couch. He was still taking care of her, now it was making sure she had food and drink.
When she accepted the plate and beer from Jayson, she smiled at him as he leaned down to kiss her lips. She couldn’t help but let her eyes follow him as he walked back into the kitchen to get his own plate.
“Why do I have a feeling we’re going to be losing you to this place?” Rocky murmured beside her.
“I still love him despite all these years. I trust him now that we’ve talked everything out and realized we were both stupid as hell in the past. But I’m a firm believer everything happened how it did for a reason. Besides, I thought you said if I stayed here you would stay here with me? Changing your mind now, heifer?” Lana smirked over at her best friend.
“Think this department could handle any of us on a full-time basis? I guess the real question I should ask is, are you going to apply for the department here?” Rocky countered with her question.
“Only one way to find out.” Lana winked at her as Jayson came to join them on the couch.
“What are you two up to?” Jayson asked, taking a bite into his pizza.
“Girl talk.” Lana smirked again as she bit into her own pizza.
Lana ate several more bites before she reached behind her and pulled out the envelope that Angelo left for her to find when she took out his motorcycle. When she read over the note, she couldn’t help but scrunch her eyes as she tried to decipher his message.
“What?” Jayson asked as he leaned over to the side to read along with her.
Lana ignored his question for now as she continued to read and re-read the note to catch the hints he was putting into the letter. She felt like she was missing something until she did a fourth re-read of the note and finally realized what he was saying.
“Angelo says the cartel nor the MC club have anything to do with the missing girls.”
“Well, that’s hard to believe since they are here and the logo is close to theirs. I say we make a visit to Angelo and his friends to get some real answers. Lana, want to have fun? We can have a little fun fucking them up for their attack on you.” Sgt. Bueller winked over at Lana.
“Wait, what was Angelo’s cover that would allow him to make a call to you?” Ryan asked, confusion in his voice as he looked between Jayson and Lana.
Lana bit her lower lip in worry about how Jayson would take the news of the ruse they used for it. She knew he wouldn’t careabout the military aspect part, but the part that included using Dani, then he would probably have a major issue with the whole thing.
“His back story is we booted him out of the Army because of me. We faked a dishonorable discharge on him for sexual assault of a senior officer because he hated taking orders from a female. His backstory is that he believes Dani is his child.”
Lana couldn’t help but scrunch up her shoulders as she delivered the last bit of news about Angelo’s cover story. She was waiting for Jayson’s explosion when he just leaned back in his seat and took another bite of his pizza.
“No comment?” Rocky asked, confusion clear in her own voice.
“No. Didn’t you say that he mentioned me?” Jayson looked over at Lana as he took a swig of his beer.
Lana looked at Jayson in confusion at his question. It took a couple of seconds to decipher why he asked, but once she got it, she knew why he was okay.
“You think he knows Dani’s yours and that’s why you’re okay with it?” Lana guessed, as she continued to study Jayson.
When Jayson winked at her, she knew she had hit the nail on the head with his reasoning. She didn’t know how Angelo would know that Dani was Jayson’s, since the girl looked more like her.
“She looks like Lana. How would the man know she’s yours?” Ryan asked, scratching his head.
Lana wondered the same thing. She thought back to her meetings with Angelo the few times they had met in her office during his fake ‘arrests’ when she was in Texas.
“The photos on Lana’s desk.” Swift looked between her teammates as she made her statement.
