However, that wouldn’t be happening. There may have only been five of us but we had ties to other groups. Motorcycle clubs that relied on us. People that would have our backs. Project X was screwed.
Noah considered his offer. I wanted to punch him in the face.
“It would be nice to be part of a larger group,” he said, taking a step toward Garrett. “I would be interested. I’m sure Damon would as well. I’ll get him on board.”
Garrett studied me suspiciously. “What about him?”
“What about him?” Noah repeated. “There’s nothing going on between us. A little on the job tension. That’s all.”
My jaw clenched, my teeth grinding together. If I was going down, I was taking this son of a bitch with me.
“Fine. Talk to Damon. Call me. We’ll set up a meeting. You can go now.” With an abrupt nod, Garrett dismissed Noah completely.
Because I knew Noah better than I wanted to admit, I knew how much that pissed him off. Even though he did a damn good job at suppressing his reaction, he pasted a smile on his face instead.
Offering his hand to Garrett, he said, “Sounds good. We’ll be in touch. Here’s to a profitable future together.”
As Garrett reached to take his hand, Noah grabbed hold of him, jerking him close. Spinning him around and pressing a gun to his head. It all happened so fast. I didn’t even see Noah grab for his gun.
“What the fuck?” Garrett shouted. “What kind of game are you playing here, Cunningham? You must have a death wish.”
“No games. You’re going to come for a little walk with Dom and me. Your men are going to stay here. Otherwise, I put a bullet in your brain. Understood?” Using the arm he held twisted behind Garrett’s back, Noah gave him a shove to get him moving forward.
“What should we do, boss?” asked one of Garrett’s men.
Garrett was absolutely fuming, yet I saw the fear gleaming in his eyes. “Nothing. Stay here and wait.”
Since he had no choice, he allowed Noah to shove him along down the alley. I followed with my gun drawn, keeping an eye on Garrett’s men as we drew further away. I wasn’t sure what Noah had planned. Although I couldn’t deny the warm sensation that filled me. The burst of relief and something more when he turned on Garrett.
I wasn’t one for warm and fuzzy feelings. It wasn’t in my nature. But something about this felt warm and fuzzy. Goddammit.
Noah marched Garrett all the way back to the rental car he’d been using to tail me earlier. He motioned for me to get in the passenger side. Then he stripped Garrett of his weapons and shoved him into the middle of the street before climbing into the driver’s side. He started the engine and peeled away, leaving Garrett there staring after us.
“Looks like we have a bit of a problem,” I said, curiously glancing over at Noah.
He studied his review mirror for a moment before meeting my inquisitive gaze. “Yeah, looks like we do.”
CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX
DOM
We drove along in silence for several long minutes. The tension stretching between us. Finally, I said, “You took a hit job on me? And here I thought you simply wanted to kill me for your own personal enjoyment.”
A wry smile crossed Noah’s face. “I could say the same to you.”
“For the record, I wanted to kill you before I got the job.” I angled myself in my seat so I could watch him.
He glanced over to meet my eyes momentarily in the dark. “Ditto.”
I had to bite back the urge to slap him upside the head. Instead of giving in to my violent urge, I found myself laughing. The situation was beyond ridiculous.
“I guess we’re more alike than we want to admit.” Shoving a hand through my hair, I pointed at the intersection ahead. “Take a right. Head to my place. You should probably call Damon and tell him to come too.”
“Your place?” A brow arched, Noah waited for me to elaborate.
“Yeah, Auryn and Stray are already there. I’ll get Casper and Rebel to meet us. I think we all need to discuss thissituation.” Pulling out my phone, I texted both Rebel and Casper, telling them there was an emergency and we needed to meet right now.
Noah was quiet for a moment before saying, “Do you think that’s a good idea? All of us together.”
