“That’s why I’ve stayed away until now. I don’t want my bad mood to ruin the vibe of your party.”
“Don’t be silly. When you fly back to your boring apartment in London, you’ll regret not having enjoyed this weekend in Spain.”
“Speaking of weekend, I won’t be sleeping on the yacht.”
“I figured. I booked a hotel for you.”
“Why did you go to so much trouble? You barely know me, Zarif.”
“Maybe because you’re a breath of fresh air in my stifling world.”
“I’m not sure I understand.”
“Look around you, Madeline. What do you see?”
I do as he asks. “A lot of wealthy people?”
“And bored, just like me. You’re different.”
“If you say something like ‘you’re a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day,’ I’ll vomit.”
He throws his head back and laughs. Zarif and Irfan are as handsome as Kamal, although the oldest brother is irresistible to me. “No sunshine, then?”
“No, thank you.” I end up smiling too.
“Alright. I promise to save the cheesy nicknames for my potential partners, but only if you come dance with me for at least one song.”
I hesitate for a moment but end up agreeing. There’s nothing wrong with having a little fun.
On the dance floor, I get lost in the song. In no time, I forget all my worries. If there’s one thing I’ve always loved doing, it’s dancing.
I’m so caught up in the excitement that I don’t even notice Zarif’s hands on my hips until I feel someone behind me, embracing me by the waist. A stern voice says loud enough to be heard over the music, “Let her go.”
I see Zarif taking a step back, although he doesn’t look scared. There’s a sarcastic smile on his face.
I shudder and turn around, coming face-to-face with the man who has made me lose several nights of sleep. “Kamal?”
“You’re coming with me, Madeline.”
I don’t even have time to think about what’s happening before he starts dragging me off the dance floor.
I can feel several people watching us. To avoid causing a scene, I let him lead me.
He intertwines our fingers and walks in silence towards the exit of the yacht.
When we reach the parking lot, he says, “Get in the car.”
“I’m not ready to leave yet.”
“Don’t test me, Madeline. I’m at my limit.”
“Is this order coming from my boss? Because if that’s the case, I have no choice but to obey.”
He leans down to whisper in my ear, a cruel smile on his face. “The order comes from your man. Get in the car.”
Chapter 27
I’m shaking as I get into the car, and I try to convince myself it’s because I’m angry. But I know I’m lying to myself—most of my nervousness comes from the excitement of him being here.
