“She had one of the men bring food to her every other week.”
“But I didn’t see a man or food.”
Derek nodded.“The guy and Mary met outside the walls of the convent every other week and always after midnight. The food she got, she hid in a box under a floorboard in her room.I’m not sure how she did it, but a steel box with a lid was installed under the floor in her closet. The box was to keep rodents and bugs out of her food.”
Angel rested against her daddy’s chest and thought about everything.“Was anyone in danger?”
“We were worried about you when we heard chatter that Mary wanted to sell you. That’s why I stepped in.If she saw that Mother Teresa asked me to take you, she couldn’t very well sell you.Fortunately, I scared her more than I did you.”
“She was.I saw the look on her face, but she was also happy I would be gone.”
Derek smirked.“Of course. She didn’t want you to catch her doing anything.”
“Where is she now?”Angel asked.
“She’s in custody, and she’s giving us information on the group for a lesser sentence.”
“So, she’ll go to prison?”Angel asked.
Derek nodded.“Oh, yes.For a long time.”
“If I had stayed, would you have really tried to marry me?”
Derek looked at Thomas and grinned.“I would have done my very best to get you used to me and hopefully find me attractive enough to give me a chance.”
“Because you’re a daddy, too?”
Derek nodded.“Yes.And like your daddy here, I knew right away that you were a little and not only incredibly sweet but gorgeous.”
Angel felt herself blush. Both men chuckled.
Thomas tilted her head back.“But I got you first, and I’m keeping you.”
Angel smiled.“I know that, Daddy.”She could tell that her faith in him pleased him very much.
She had no idea how long she and her daddy stared at each other before Derek cleared his throat. Her face heated again, and she heard Thomas snort.
“Do you have any more questions for me, honey?”Derek asked.
Angel thought about it.“I don’t think so.”
“Well, if you think of any, tell your daddy, and he’ll get in touch with me,” Derek said and stood.“Now, I should get back to Sara.”
“Sara?”
Derek nodded and grinned.“You see, she never really wanted to be a nun.She ran from a brutal father who wanted to sell her and ended up at the convent. She said she had to pretend to be a nun to stay there.”
Angel’s eyes widened.“Oh, wow.So, she’s not at the convent anymore?”
“No.She’s with me.”
Thomas got her attention.“You see, Sara is a little like you, and they were attracted to each other.Sara was afraid of him until she found out he was an agent and pretended to be there for you.”
“We’re taking it slow,” Derek said.“I know she’s the one I’ve been looking for, but it’s taking her longer to get used to being out of the convent and being a normal person.”
“Do you think I could see her sometime?”Angel asked.“She was the only friend I had there.”
“Sure.I’ll set something up with your daddy.I know it’s good to have littles spend time with other ones.”
