“I’m so sorry to bother you,” I said in a sweet voice, though the look on my face was anything but sweet. It was closer to homicidal rage. “It’s not like I have anything better to do.”
“You may think you’re cute, but I can assure you that you aren’t,” he hissed. He jerked his chin at Eric who nodded and stepped forward to talk with the man watching us through narrow eyes.
Liam dragged me a few steps further into the crowd, placing it between us and them.
“What is it you want?”
“It’s something that would be better seen than retold.”
His face reflected irritation. “Just tell me whatever it is.”
“Trust me. You need to see it.” I added a ‘catch the hint’ raise of my eyebrows.
The frown lines on his forehead said he finally caught the hint.
“This really isn’t a good time,” he said, looking back at Eric and his companion.
“Hey, this is your show. You want to ignore this; I can’t stop you, but don’t blame me when you get screwed later.”
That was probably more than I should have said. A secret agent I was not.
Nathan appeared beside us. “She needs to get out of here. We can’t afford for Tse to get upset.”
He pronounced the man’s name using the Ts from the word Tsunami and the e sound from the word bed. I knew without trying I would probably butcher the name by trying to repeat it.
“There seems to be a problem,” Liam said in a grim tone of voice.
Nathan’s eyes shot to mine. For once, there was no humor in them. Gone was the joking man I’d met yesterday.
“This should wait.”
“Can’t,” I said.
I had a feeling they would want to know about the headless body even if they were being difficult at the moment.
Nathan bent closer, his face growing intent. “It. Should. Wait.”
I said through gritted teeth, “It. Can’t.”
Nathan’s gaze shot to Liam whose jaw locked. Liam looked no happier about the situation.
“I’ll go,” Nathan volunteered.
I thought about it. Nathan probably had the knowledge we needed. That might work. On the other hand, if he saw the body and needed Liam he’d have to come back here and risk drawing more attention to us. I shook my head. Thomas had wanted Liam. Better to be safe than sorry.
“What is so important that it can’t wait?” Nathan asked in frustration.
I gave him a fake smile and gestured at the crowd saying between my teeth, “Do you really want to discuss this here?”
He looked around and acceptance registered on his face.
Liam said, “Lead the way.”
I released a sigh of relief. Finally.
He caught hold of my arm saying so only I could hear, “This had better be as important as you’ve indicated. You will not like the consequences if it’s not.”
I met his eyes and indicated I understood.
