“Why? Because I won’t tell you everything you want to know?” Liam asked, his lips twisted in a superior smile. “You were in the military. You’re familiar with need to know. This is information that you don’t need to know because you’re going to stay far, far away from what’s causing this. You’re going to stop sticking your nose where it doesn’t belong and concentrate on the mission I gave you.”
Yeah and that whole need to know thing hadn’t gone over so well even when I was in the military and had no choice but to swallow the company line. It didn’t go down any better this time. Just made me want to knock that smug look off his face.
“Who’s to say following your mission doesn’t lead me right to this thing?” I argued.
It was a legitimate question. This had witch and vampire written all over it and this task he gave me would take me right into their backyard.
“If you do your job right, it won’t be a concern.”
His response caused me to pause. Sounded like he knew more about whatever this was than I had previously thought.
“You know what’s going on.” My voice was flat.
He gave a nod. “I have an idea.”
“And you’re not going to do anything about it.”
“It’s not that easy. There are things going on that you don’t understand.”
“Then explain.”
“I would if you were to join one of the clans.”
“Not happening.”
“Then that information will continue to be something you don’t need to know.”
I narrowed my eyes at him. What were we, three? Don’t do what I want and I’m going to hold this stick over your head?
Vampires.
“Now, what’s happening with the job I gave you?” he asked, ignoring my frustration.
I wanted to put my foot down and demand answers, but from the implacable look on his face, I knew that probably wouldn’t work, and would most likely result in a screaming match. On my end at least.
I gave the two in the front seat a meaningful look.
“I trust them and they already know most of it,” Liam said.
For a super-secret mission, he clued a lot of people in on the details.
“I’m working the problem.”
I didn’t have much to update him on.
“What does that mean?”
“It means I’ve talked to the witches, and they haven’t been very helpful.”
Liam’s face was stony as he said, “Perhaps you need to go higher in their organization.”
“Sarah seemed pretty powerful to me.” My mind flashed back to the coiled power I felt surrounding Sarah and the avariciousness in her gaze when she looked at me. I wasn’t sure I wanted to tangle with a witch more powerful than her.
“Sarah?” Liam’s voice turned sharp. “Sarah Temper.”
“That would be her.”
“She’s their crone.”
